కోలా (ఆంగ్లం Koala) ఒక విధమైన చిన్న ఎలుగుబంటి లాగా కనిపించే మార్సుపీలియా తరగతికి చెందిన క్షీరదాలు. ఇది ఆస్ట్రేలియా ఖండానికి చెందిన శాకాహారి. దీని శాస్త్రీయ నామం Phascolarctos cinereus ఫాస్కోలార్క్టిడే కుటుంబానికి చెందిన ఏకైన జీవి. కోలా ఆస్ట్రేలియా సముద్రతీరం వెంట తూర్పు నుండి దక్షిణంగా వ్యాపించి ఉన్నాయి. కొంతదూరం అడవీప్రాంతాలలో భూభాగం లోపలికి కూడా వ్యాపించాయి.
పేర్లు
కోలా శాస్త్రీయ నామమైన ప్రజాతి, Phascolarctos గ్రీకు భాషలోని phaskolos అనగా "pouch", arktos "ఎలుగుబంటి" అని అర్ధం. జాతి నామం cinereus అనగా లాటిన్ భాషలో "బూడిద రంగు" అని అర్ధం.[3]
ఇంగ్లీషు భాషలోని మారినప్పుడు టెడ్డీ బేర్ (Teddy bear) ని పోలినందువలన కోలా ఎలుగుబంటిగా బాగా ప్రాచుర్యం పొందింది. అయితే శాస్త్రీయంగా సరైనది కాదు. కోలా ఎలుగుబంటి ఆస్ట్రేలియా తప్ప ఇతర ప్రాంతాలలో ఇంకా ప్రసిద్ధిచెందింది.[4], [5][6] దీని ఇతర ఆంగ్ల నామాలు 'కోతి ఎలుగుబంటి', 'చెట్టు ఎలుగుబంటి', మొదలైనవి కూడా ఉన్నాయి.[7]
