Shrubs or trees. Flowers bisexual, 5-merous (in ours), subtended by a subulate bract and 2 bracteoles inserted at the base of the flower. Inflorescence composed of axillary panicles. Calyx fused to ovary, the lobes persistent at the apex of the fruit, without glands. Corolla campanulate, marked with glandular dots or lines. Ovary semi-inferior (in ours). Fruit dry or fleshy, ± spherical, crowned with persistent sepals and style, many-seeded. Seeds numerous.

Maesa is a genus of flowering plants. It is placed in the family Primulaceae, subfamily Maesoideae, for which it is the sole genus (monotypic).[1] Previously it was placed in Myrsinaceae, or in a family of its own, Maesaceae.[2][3] There are about 100 species, the majority of which occur in Malesia, New Guinea, western Asia and the Pacific Islands.[3]

These plants are vines, shrubs, and trees up to 12 meters tall.[3]
