Kinetoplastid flagellates, with a plant host and a phytophagous hemipteran; cyclical development occurs in the bug; after transformation in the midgut of the vector, the flagellates migrate to the salivary glands; promastigote form retained throughout this cycle; twisting of the body is a common feature in this genus; the habit of assigning all plant trypanosomatids to a single genus may soon have to be abandoned as enormous heterogeneity is being discovered amongst them; type species Phytomonas davidi.
