The katuali or flat-tail sea snake (Laticauda schistorhyncha) is a species of venomous sea snake in the family Elapidae. The species is found only in the waters of the Pacific Islands nation of Niue.
L. schistorhyncha grows to a total length (including tail) of up to 1 m (3.3 ft), and is highly venomous, making it one of the most potentially dangerous creatures on the planet. It has a fin-like tail, helping it to swim better.[3][4]
The katuali lives most of its adult life in the sea.
During mating, the male katuali wraps itself around the female until she is fertilized. Because the eggs would not survive in water, the female swims into a sea cave to lay the eggs in dry crevices. These eggs take six months to hatch, and then the infant snakes make their way to the ocean.[5]

Laticauda schistorhynchus ou tricot rayé de Nuie est une espèce de serpents marins venimeux de la famille des Elapidae[1]. Il est appelé Katuali par les niuéens.
Cette espèce est endémique des eaux de la petit île corallienne de Niue[1].
C'est un petit tricot rayé qui ne mesure qu'environ 0,75 m. Il ressemble beaucoup à un petit tricot rayé asiatique : son corps est gris bleuté avec de larges barres brunes s'estompant sur les flancs.
Il vit en mer où il chasse des poissons dans les bancs de coraux et sur terre pour se réchauffer, digérer, boire de l'eau douce et dormir.
C'est un serpent ovipare qui pond ses œufs sur la terre ferme.
Il est très venimeux mais peu agressif : il est extrêmement rare qu'il morde un être humain mais en cas d'une très improbable morsure il faut aller d'urgence à l'hôpital.
Sa survie est menacée par le réchauffement climatique et la montée des eaux, les cyclones et par les activités humaines telles l'urbanisation des côtes et la pêche. Les mangoustes, introduites par l'homme pour chasser les rats, sont aussi de redoutables dangers pour ces tricots rayés[2].
