Oligodon formosanus (Formosa kukri snake or beautiful kukri snake) is a species of snake of the family Colubridae.[1][2]
This snake is named after its range in Taiwan (Formosa).
The scale colorings range in the brown-red spectrum. The body is a tawny light brown with two darker russet stripes running down either side of the spine, where thin black lines that break into smaller dotted patterns occasionally diagonally intersect. The underbelly is off-white.
The snake is found in China including Hong Kong and Hainan, Japan including Ryukyu Islands, mostly Okinawa, Miyako and Yaeyama, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam.[1][2]

Dans sa description[2] Günther indique que le spécimen en sa possession mesure 56 cm dont 11,5 mm pour la queue. Son dos est brun clair et de nombreuses écailles sont bordées de noir. Sa face ventrale est uniformément jaunâtre.
Son nom d'espèce, formosanus[1], lui a été donné en référence à Formose, l'ancien nom de Taïwan où a été découvert cette espèce.

台湾小头蛇（学名：Oligodon formosanus）又名赤背松柏根，为游蛇科小头蛇属的爬行动物，俗名台湾秤杆蛇。分布于越南、台湾岛以及中国大陆的浙江、福建、江西、湖南、广东、广西、贵州、云南等地，多生活于平原及高山。该物种的模式产地在台湾。[2]
小型蛇類，最長約90公分，一般常見為60-70公分。吻部短，頭部後方有一道深褐色的「人」字形斑紋，身體中央有一條橙紅色的條紋從脖子延伸到尾巴。
棲息於低海拔山區、農墾地、海岸防風林中，主要以鳥類、蜥蜴的卵為主食，在一些海岸，赤背松柏根也會吃綠蠵龜在沙灘上產下的卵。
