Esenbeckia flava Brand. Zoe 1 : 378. 1891 A shrub or small tree, sometimes attaining a height of 7 m. and a trunk-diameter of 15-20 cm., the young branches, panicles, and lower surface of the leaves tomentose ; petioles velvety, 1-2 cm. long; leaves simple, oblong-elliptic to oval or sometimes oblongobovate, entire or obsoletely crenulate, 5-10 cm. long, 2.8-5 cm. broad, usually retuse or emarginate at the apex, more or less inequilateral at the base; flowers 1.3-1.4 cm. in diameter, in terminal panicles which are usually longer than the leaves ; sepals ovate to broadly ovate, 2 mm. long; petals oblong-oval, oblong-ovate, or sometimes ovate, 4-6 mm. long, 2.5-5 mm. broad ; filaments accumbent in the shallow grooves of the disk, at length reflexed ; anthers apiculate ; ovary immersed in the disk, densely verrucose-echinate ; style cylindric or slightly clavate ; stigma capitate, obscurely lobed ; capsule depressed-globose, 3-4 cm. broad, 2 cm. thick, more or less strongly verrucose-echinate ; seeds broadly ovoidconic, 10-11 mm. broad, dark-brown.
Type locality : San Jose del Cabo, Lower California. Distribution : Cape region of Lower California.
