Dimorphic, alternating between diplokaryotic and monokaryotic stages in one sequence of the life cycle and entirely diplokaryotic in another (rarer) sequence; merogony - binary division of diplokaryotic cells; sporogony - sporogonial plasmodium gives rise by rosettelike fission to 416 spores, which are elongate pyriform, uninucleate with a vesicular polaroplast and thin and smooth walls; during autumn months another type of sporogon takes place in which the sporogonial plasmodium gives rise to 416 pyriform spores, 5.46.6 x 2.42.7 µm, diplokaryotic with lamellar polaroplast and a thick wall ornamented with several ribs and a naillike posterior protrusion; type species G. spinosa (Golberg, 1971) Weiser, 1977 in adipose tissue and salivary glands, mainly of larvae of Culex pipiens (Diptera, Culicidae).
