A shrub or small tree with grayish branches which are commonly leafy chiefly toward the ends ; twigs, petioles, rachis, and inflorescence more or less puberulent, the rachis narrowly winged, the wings often incurved, forming a groove above ; leaves odd-pinnate or occasionallv equally-pinnate, 2-6 cm. long; leaflets 7-17, sessile or subsessile, oblong-elliptic to oval, ovate, or obovate, occasionally lanceolate, 0.5-1.5 cm. long, 0.3-0.8 cm. broad, acute to obtuse or sometimes rounded and emarginate at the apex, cuneate or somewhat inequilaterally rounded at the base, crenulate with small, usually few teeth above the middle, or entire ; pellucid glands below the crenatures, those scattered on the surface dark-brown or blackish and opaque ; inflorescence short-racemose, few-flowered ; pistillate flowers (undeveloped): sepals 4, puberulent, the two exterior ones triangular-orbicular or suborbicular, the two inner smaller; petals 4, oval or ovate-oval, puberulent, gibbous below the apex ; follicles obovoid or globose-obovoid, 4-5.5 mm. in diameter before dehiscing ; seeds nearly globose, 3.5-4.5 mm. in diameter, black, shining.
Type locality : Lake Cuitzeo, Michoacan.
Distribution : Central and southern Mexico.
