Leaf-blades ovate or oblong to ovate-lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate, or lanceolate, 5-16 cm. long, acute, sometimes abruptly pointed or obtuse, undulate, ultimately glabrous above, permanently more or less pubescent beneath, paler green beneath than above, rounded or subcordate at the base, short-petioled ; cymes sessile, the branches sparingly pubescent, or glabrous in age; sepals ovate, 3-3.5 mm. long, glabrous or sparingly pubescent, the glands fully one half the length of the sepal-body ; corolla purple or purplish, 10-20 mm. wide, the larger petals mostly 8-9 mm. long ; drupes broadly ovoid-pyramidal, 8-13 mm. long, red.
Type collected in Santo Domingo, West Indies, 1871, C. Wright, C. C. Parry, & H. Brummei 121 (herb. U. S. Nat. Mus. 309S3J) . Distribution : Santo Domingo.

Malpighia ovatifolia Small, sp. nov
Leaf-blades ovate, 5-9 cm. long, acute or slightly acuminate, prominently reticulate on both sides, pale-green, glabrous above at least in age, permanently pubescent beneath with scattered coarse yellow hairs, rounded at the base, very short-petioled ; cymes sessile, the branches glabrous, at least at maturity ; sepals ovate to oblong-ovate, 2.5-3 mm. long, glabrous, the glands about one half the length of the sepal-body ; corolla not seen ; drupes pyramidal, 12-14 mm. long, red.
Type collected at Bayeau, near Port Margot, Haiti, August 3, 1903, George V. Nash 74 (herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard.).
Distribution : Known only from the type locality.
