This aquatic plant has been historically recorded from the Cyrenaica region of Libya, but in recent years has been observed only from tiny ephemeral pools on the island of Gavdos off the south coast of the Greek island of Crete (Kriti). Whether this species can persist depends in large part on the viability of its seed bank. It is considered critically endangered by the IUCN.
Callitriche pulchra,[2] the beautiful water starwort, is a plant that was listed on the 2012 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species,[1] based on specimens gathered on Gavdos island, Crete by H. D. Schotsman. Additionally, two of Pamapani's specimens were identified at Le Due Palme.[3] Schotsman thereafter classified in 1968 in three different ponds located in Cyrenaica.[4] In 2015 Callitriche pulchra was detected in Cyprus, somewhat reducing its endangered status.[5] Other locations it has been encountered include Greece,[6] Libya[7] and Syria.[8]
