General Description

Conidiophores. Short, pale brown, inflated, simple, bearing conidia singly and terminally. Conidia. Smoky brown or jet black, globose or subglobose, 11-16 × 10-13 μm, commonly 12-14 μm wide. Ascomata. Perithecial, formed in clusters of 1-7 in uniseriate or irregular rows, up to 2 mm long, subepiderrnal, erumpent, globose or ovoid, up to 250 μm diam., with papillate ostioles; around each perithecial group is a blackened area of host tissue. Asci. Short stalked, unitunicate, clavate, 55-75 × 8.5-12 μm, 8-spored, with spores arranged in two rows. Ascospores. Colourless, granular, curved, inequilateral, 16-21 × 5-7 μm, tapering to the base with rounded ends, initially non-septate but on discharge from the ascus and on germination may develop a single transverse septum dividing the spore unequally into two. Paraphyses. Thin-walled, septate.
