The caterpillar of this moth feeds not only on oak leaves but also on other deciduous trees including birch, lime, hazel and sloe leaves. Common in England and Wales but less frequent in Scotland and Ireland. Its beautiful colouring serves as an excellent camouflage on the lichen covered trunk of an oak tree. I set my trap up complete with vertical hanging bedsheet on a hill at Parndon Wood, surrounded by mature Oak tree's, this looked a better spot than anywhere else. It did indeed proove itself with no less than 176 moths of 12 species about what i'd expect this time of year in this sort of habitat. The weather was indeed on my side too with 15 degrees recorded during the day, the clouds were slower to appear after dark than it was orignially predicted by the weather forecaster's and therefore the temperature did drop to a chilly 6c. Description: Recent moth bits and a welcome returning species On Tuesday at work I was just checking the bug zapper in the kitchen (as I do frequently to see if there's any interesting deceased moths amongst the frazzle of flies, I found 2 Emmelina monodactyla, 1 Agonopterix heracliana and an Epiphyas postvittana, pretty much expected species in the middle of a town but as I just moved the zapper I saw a large dark micro just sitting there..and I said to myself 'Well I wasn't expecting to see a Diurnea fagella' it being new for the year for me..rescued from the perils of electricity I took him home for a better photo. That same night and after another mild day hitting 16 degrees the trap went out at 6pm ready to see what might turn up come the morning, the sky did clear and it was a little cool this morning with a heavy dew but I was still pleased with 12 moths of 8 species which I know seems little in comparison to other trappers lists at the moment. It was certainly quality over quantity as well with even a mint condition Epiphyas postvittana grabbing my attention for a photo. The best moth for me was a very pale Lead-coloured Drab, only my second record for the garden (I had forgot that I first took this species in 2014). It is a moth that I use to trap commonly when I lived with my parents, sometimes 5 or 6 per trap would you believe! Also my second Oak Beauty of the year was nice and a really striking Clouded Drab had to have it's shoot with the Lead-coloured Drab. All in all a pleasing result. Description: A mild wet and breezy night yields a Beauty! Mild, with a few showers around and a bit cool at nights has been the theme of late, but last night we had plenty of cloud cover again like the previous night (when I only managed 3 Tortricodes alternella's) Last night though was quite productive for my small garden. Both Common Quaker (2) and Hofmannophila pseudospretella (1) were new for the year but the star of the catch and the only moth that wasn't in the trap was a stunning Oak Beauty, a regular in small numbers to the garden trap. Still the egg boxes were comletely soaked and the trap inside was flooded, so we had had a generous portion of rain during the night. Drying out time for the trays! Edit! The suspected Hofmannophila pseudospretella has turned out to be a Depressaria species, which I think is daucella? Any ideas welcome.
