Ostorhinchus ist eine Gattung der Kardinalbarsche (Apogonidae), die im Roten Meer und im tropischen Indopazifik von der Küste Ostafrikas bis Japan, Hawaii, Französisch-Polynesien und zur Osterinsel verbreitet ist.

Merkmale

Ostorhinchus-Arten sind kleine Kardinalbarsche, die 5 bis 14 cm lang werden. Ihr Körper ist mehr oder weniger schlank und mit Kammschuppen bedeckt. Kopf- und Körperseiten zeigen einen oder mehrere dunkle oder helle Längsstreifen. Die Schwanzflosse ist gegabelt. Prämaxillare, Unterkiefer, Vomer und Palatinum der Fische sind mit ein oder mehreren Reihen schlanker Zähne besetzt. Das Palatinum kann auch unbezahnt sein. Die Supramaxillare, ein Knochen des Oberkiefers, fehlt. Der Grat des Vorkiemendeckels (Preoperculum) ist glatt, die Kanten gesägt. Magen und Darm sind schwärzlich.

Ostorhinchus is a genus of ray-finned fish in the family Apogonidae native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans.^[1]

Etymology

The etymology of the word Ostorhinchus is Greek, with Ostor- stemming from ὀστέον (bone), and -rhinchus stemming from ῥῠ́γχος (Ancient Greek) or ρύγχος (Modern Greek), the meaning of which can be beak. The latter refers to the genus' advanced boned jaw.^[2]

Ostorhinchus (Lacépède, 1802) è un genere di pesci ossei marini appartenenti alla famiglia Apogonidae^[1].

Distribuzione e habitat

Questo genere è diffuso nelle acque tropicali e, limitatamente a poche specie, subtropicali dell'Indo-Pacifico; molte specie sono endemiche di arcipelaghi, singole isole o perfino di scogli isolati^[2]. Ostorhinchus fasciatus, attraverso la migrazione lessepsiana si è stabilito nel mar Mediterraneo orientale^[3].

La grande maggioranza delle specie vive nelle barriere coralline o comunque su fondali duri costieri, solo poche specie sono tipiche di acque più profonde e di fondi molli^[2].

Descrizione

Sono pesci di taglia piccola, non superiore a pochi centimetri. La colorazione, importante per il riconoscimento delle specie, è assai varia e spesso vistosa: molte specie hanno colorazione rossa, altre hanno un pattern di fasce scure longitudinali. Molte specie hanno un anello o due linee blue elettrico sopra e sotto la pupilla che continuano sul corpo.^[2].

Biologia

Fanno vita notturna e di giorno stanno nascosti negli anfratti dei coralli. Le uova vengono incubate nella bocca del maschio. Si nutrono di invertebrati^[2].
