Common in shallow coastal waters (Ref. 9338). Occurs in small aggregations over reefs. Feeds by scraping the substrate for coralline red algae, and probably on coral polyps. Scrapes algae from rock and coral formations with its powerful "beak" (Ref. 28023). Only caught occasionally (Ref. 9338). Roving herbivore that feeds on detritus, turf algae and macroalgae (Ref. 57615).
