Ablabys binotatus és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels tetrarògids i a l'ordre dels escorpeniformes.[5][6]
Ablabys deriva del grec ablabie, -es, ablaboos (inofensiu),[7] mentre que l'epitet binotatus (del llatí bi- + notatus) vol dir "que té dos punts o altres marques".[8]
El seu cos fa 15 cm de llargària màxima i és de color marró fosc amb marques grogues o negres i una taca blanca o argentada per sobre de les aletes pectorals. 15 espines i 8-9 radis tous a l'única aleta dorsal. 3 espines i 5 radis tous a l'anal.[9] Línia lateral contínua i amb 22-26 escates. 3-8 branquiespines (3-6 a la part inferior i 0-2 a la superior). Absència d'aleta adiposa. Aletes pectorals amb cap espina i 11-12 radis tous.[10]
El seu nivell tròfic és de 3,39.[11]
És un peix marí, associat als esculls[12] i de clima tropical (29°N-32°S, 30°E-60°E),[13] el qual viu a l'Índic occidental:[9][14] les zones submareals somes i amb vegetació[13] des de Zanzíbar (Tanzània)[9][15][16] fins a la desembocadura del riu Xora (Sud-àfrica),[9][17] incloent-hi Moçambic,[18][19] les illes Maldives,[20][21] el corrent Agulhas,[22][23] el golf de Mannar (costa sud-oriental de l'Índia)[24] i, possiblement també, les illes Seychelles.[25][3]
És inofensiu per als humans,[13] el seu índex de vulnerabilitat és moderat (35 de 100)[26] i acostuma a balancejar-se cap enrere i cap endavant en el seu ambient natural.[27]

Ablabys binotatus , the redskinfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a waspfish belonging to the subfamily Tetraroginae of the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes and their relatives. This species is found in the Indian Ocean.
Ablabys binotatus was first formally described in 1855 as Apistus binotatus by the German naturalist and explorer Wilhelm Karl Hartwig Peters with the type locality given as Ibo in Mozambique.[3] The specific name binotatus means "twice marked" , presumed to be an allusion to the silvery-white spot on each flank on the lateral line, i.e. two spots.[4]
Ablabys binotatus has 15 spines and 8 or 9 soft rays in the dorsal fin and 3 spines and 5 soft rays in the anal fin. It is dark brown in overall colour with a silvery botch on each side of the body above the pectoral fins and with some yellow or black markings. This species attains a maximum total length of 15 cm (5.9 in).[2]
Ablabys binotatus is found in the western Indian Ocean where it has been confirmed to occur through specimen records in along the eastern coast of Africa in Mozambique and South Africa but reports from Zanzibar, Réunion, The Maldives, India and the Gulf of Oman are unconfirmed.[1] It is found in subtidal, shallows among seaweed.[2]

This means that the actual distribution and population of this species are not known. The IUCN has therefore assessed this species as Data Deficient.[1]
