Micropoecilia ist eine Untergattung der Gattung Poecilia innerhalb der lebendgebärenden Zahnkarpfen (Poeciliinae). Von manchen Autoren wird Micropoecilia auch als Gattung geführt, der genaue Status ist umstritten.

Merkmale

Es handelt sich um kleine, dem bekannten Guppy ähnelnde Fische. Die Tiere erreichen eine Länge zwischen 1,6 und 5 cm. Männchen besitzen eine zum Gonopodium umgebildete Afterflosse und sind auffälliger gefärbt als ihre weiblichen Artgenossen.

Verbreitung und Lebensweise

Die Arten der Untergattung sind in Guyana, Brasilien und auf Trinidad beheimatet. Über die Lebensweise der Fische ist kaum etwas bekannt.

Systematik

Die Untergattung bildet die Schwestergruppe der Guppys (Acanthophacelus) innerhalb der Gattung Poecilia. Nach der letzten größeren Revision der lebendgebärenden Zahnkarpfen durch P. Lucinda (2005)^[1] wurde Micropoecilia noch als Gattung geführt, aber bereits erkannt, dass es sich bei der Gattung Poecilia nicht um ein Monophylum handeln kann. Bragança, Costa und Gama (2010)^[2] beschrieben den zu Micropoecilia zu rechnenden Poecilia sarrafae, wodurch Micropoecilia zum Synonym für Poecilia wurde. 2012^[3] folgte die Erstbeschreibung von Poecilia waiapi durch dieselben Autoren.

Micropoecilia is a genus of poeciliids native to fresh and brackish water from the Amazon Basin to Trinidad. While recognized as valid by FishBase, others have considered this genus as being synonymous with Poecilia.^[2]

Species

There are currently four recognized species in this genus:^[3]

• Micropoecilia bifurca (C. H. Eigenmann, 1909)
• Micropoecilia branneri (C. H. Eigenmann, 1894) (Branner's livebearer)
• Micropoecilia minima (W. J. E. M. Costa & Sarraf, 1997)
• Micropoecilia picta (Regan, 1913) (Swamp guppy)

The type species of the genus is Micropoecilia parae^[1] but this is not included within the genus by Fishbase but other workers have recovered this species within the subgenus Micropoecilia of Poecilia, arguing that Micropoecilia, alongside the subgenera Acanthophacelus, Limia, Pamphorichthys and Mollienesia should all be retained as subgenera of Poecilia, which is remains a monopyletic clade in this classification. This is partly to ensure the conserving of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) as a species within the genus due to its familiarity as a study organism.^[4]
