A Xile és depredat pel lluç austral (Merluccius australis), i a les illes Malvines per Cottoperca gobio, Salilota australis, Schroederichthys bivius, l'agullat (Squalus acanthias), Bathyraja brachyurops i Bathyraja griseocauda.[8][9][10][11][12]
És un peix marí, pelàgic-nerític, oceanòdrom[13] i de clima subtropical (38°S-58°S, 70°W-57°W).[6][14]
Es troba a l'Atlàntic sud-occidental: des de la latitud 40°S fins a la Terra del Foc i les illes Malvines.[6][14][15][16][17]
És inofensiu per als humans.[6]

La sardina fueguina (Sprattus fuegensis) es una especie de pez clupeiforme perteneciente a la familia Clupeidae hallado en aguas subtropicales del Atlántico Sur en la Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego y las islas Malvinas.
La sardina fueguina habita la plataforma continental de la Patagonia y Tierra del Fuego entre los 43°30' y 55° de latitud sur y las mismas latitudes en las aguas de las islas Malvinas.
Tiene un cuerpo fusiforme con la cabeza relativamente pequeña. Es de color gris en el dorso, aclarándose en los flanco y blanco en el vientre; las aletas son transparentes. La longitud máxima se registra en las Malvinas con 20,5 cm de longitud.
