The goldspotted eel (Myrichthys ocellatus), also known as the goldspotted snake eel or the dark-spotted snake eel,[3] is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).[4] It was described by Charles Alexandre Lesueur in 1825, originally under the genus Muraenophis.[5] It is a marine, tropical eel which is known from the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, including Bermuda, southern Florida, USA; the Bahamas, Santa Catarina, and Brazil.[4] It dwells at a maximum depth of 15 metres (49 ft), and inhabits rocky and coral reefs. Males can reach a maximum total length of 110 centimetres (3.6 ft).[4]
The Goldspotted eel is a commercial aquarium fish.[4] As is common with eels, it forages for food mostly during the night; its diet consists of crabs, stomatopods, and echinoderms.[6]

Boki i grzbiet pokryte rozproszonymi ciemnymi plamami, każda z jasnożółtym (złotawym) środkiem[4][3]. Plamki młodych żmijaków są ciemne[3].
Dorosłe osobniki tego gatunku osiągają przeciętnie 30–60 cm[3], maksymalnie 110 cm długości całkowitej (TL)[4].
Prowadzi przydenny tryb życia. Pływa szybko i zwinnie. W piaszczystym dnie niszczy kryjówkę ofiary, rozpraszając podłoże szybkimi i energicznymi ruchami ogona do momentu, gdy dziura zostanie wystarczająco poszerzona, aby wsunąć w nią łeb w celu schwytania ofiary[2].
Nazwa rodzajowa: gr. μυρος muros „rodzaj węgorza morskiego”[8]; ιχθυς ikhthus „ryba”[9]. Epitet gatunkowy: łac. ocellatus „oczkowany, oznaczony oczkami”, od ocellus „oczko”, zdrobnienie od oculus „oko”[10].
Według stanu z końca 2018 roku gatunek ten figuruje w Czerwonej księdze gatunków zagrożonych Międzynarodowej Unii Ochrony Przyrody (IUCN) w kategorii najmniejszej troski (LC). Nie stwierdzono istotnych zagrożeń dla tego gatunku[2].
Żmijak złotoplamek nie jest użytkowany gospodarczo. W połowach dennych trafia się jako przyłów. Złowiony w sieci często ucieka, wwiercając się ostrym końcem ogona w tkaninę sieciową[3]. W Brazylii jest poławiany dla potrzeb akwarystyki[2].
