"BATHYDOMUS THIELEI n.sp. Pl. III., fig 8.

Shell moderately large (28.5 mm.) white, thin, globosely fusiform, sculptured with numerous narrow flat topped sharply raised spirals crossed at distant regular intervals by narrow slightly raised retractively flexuous axials; the whole shell covered by a creamy buff membranaceous epidermis. Whorls 5, globose, including a small smooth planorbid protoconch of one whorl. The spiral cords number three on the first post-nuclear whorl but increase to twelve on the penultimate, and about 41 on the body whorl, including the fasciole. The axials range from 14 on the early whorls to 12 on the body-whorl. Spire about half height of aperture plus canal. Aperture pyriform, produced below into a moderately long flexed and recurved spout-like anterior canal. Outer lip probably thin (broken away in sole specimen).

Height 28.5 mm.; diameter 16 mm. (Holotype.)

BANZARE LOCALITY: Station 41, off Enderby Land, 193 metres.

Unfortunately the only known example is an empty shell but I place it in Thiele's genus with confidence.

Watson's Fusus (Neptunea) calathiscus from 1,600 fathoms between Marion Island and the Crozets is of similar build and size and has comparable sculpture in the form of a thin membranaceous epidermis sharply wrinkled to form fine axial lamellate processes. In calathiscus these lamellae are very numerous but in the above new species they are quite distant.

A feature both of the type of the genus and of Watson's species is the long narrow wedge-shaped operculum with terminal nucleus. This character cannot be checked for my species however until living material is available."
