Der Baglafechtweber (Ploceus baglafecht, Syn.: Loxia baglafecht) zählt innerhalb der Familie der Webervögel (Ploceidae) zur Gattung der Ammerweber (Ploceus).[1]
Der Vogel kommt in Afrika vor, in Äthiopien, Burundi, Demokratische Republik Kongo, Eritrea, Kamerun, Kenia, Malawi, Nigeria, Ruanda, Sambia, Südsudan, Tansania, Uganda und Zentralafrikanische Republik.
Das Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst baum- und buschbestandene Lebensräume, Lichtungen und Waldränder, auch Büsche an Straßenrändern und Gärten von 800 bis 3000 m Höhe.[2][3]
Die Art ist 15 cm groß und wiegt zwischen 24 und 37 g. Die schwarze Augenmaske einschließlich Ohrdecken reicht bis zur Schnabelbasis, die Iris ist weiß. Die Oberseite ist graubraun bis grün, die Flügeldecken kräftig dunkelbraun und hell sandfarben gestreift. Der Schwanz ist graubraun, die Beine rosa, der Schnabel ist dunkelgrau bis anthrazit, Kehle und Brust sind hellgelb, die Unterseite, Bürzel und Schwanzunterseite hellgrau.
Bei den Unterarten reichenowi, emini und der Nominatform hat das Männchen Stirn und Scheitel bis in Augenhöhe goldgelb, der hintere Teil des Scheitels bis zum Nacken ist grau. Das Weibchen hat einen schwarzen Scheitel. Bei den Unterarten stuhlmanni und sharpii haben beide Geschlechter einen schwarzen Scheitel.[2][3]

Der Gesang des Männchens wird als Schnattern mit eingestreuten musikalischen Tönen, auch als wiederholtes „zwink-zwink“ beschrieben.[2][3][5]
Die Nahrung besteht hauptsächlich aus Insekten, Früchten, Samen und Nektar. Jungvögel werden mit Spinnen, Larven, Käfern, Grillen, Fangschrecken usw. gefüttert.
Die Brutzeit liegt zwischen August und November in Kamerun und in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, zwischen März und Juni in Kivu sowie zwischen Juli und November im Sudan.
Die Art in monogam und brütet einzeln. Das Gelege besteht aus 1 bis 3 Eiern.[2][3]
Der Bestand gilt als nicht gefährdet (Least Concern).[6] gefährdet (Vulnerable).

The baglafecht weaver (Ploceus baglafecht) is a species of weaver bird from the family Ploceidae which is found in eastern and central Africa. There are several disjunct populations with distinguishable plumage patterns.[2] Only some races display a discrete non-breeding plumage.[3]
The origin of the word baglafecht is something of a mystery and was coined by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, probably from a local name in an Abyssinian language.[4]

The baglafecht weaver has a length of 15 cm (5.9 in).
The adult male baglafecht weaver has a distinctive black mask which extends from the bill through the eye and onto the ear coverts contrasting with the bright yellow forehead, forecrown and throat. The upperparts are yellowish green with dark centres to the feathers creating a faint streaking. The underparts are bright yellow on the breast fading to white towards the vent. The tail is yellow washed dark brown. The bill is black and the eye is pale yellow.
The female baglafecht weaver lacks a mask but has dusky lores with yellowish-green cap, concolorous with the upperparts. In the non breeding plumage the mask is largely lost but there remains a dusky area around the eye, greyish brown on the upperparts, including the crown, with white washed buff underparts. Juveniles and immature birds do not have a mask on the dark-yellowish green head.[6]
The nominate race and Emin's weaver assume a distinct non-breeding plumage, but Reichenow's weaver does not.[3]
It is found in central, eastern, and south-eastern Africa.[7] It is found in forest edge, woodlands, gardens and towns.[2][8]
The baglafecht weaver normally breeds singly rather than in colonies. The nests are loosely woven and usually placed in the foliage of trees or bushes. It is often aggressive to other birds and not shy of people.[2]
