The dark-capped bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found in central, eastern and south-eastern Africa.

Taxonomy and systematics

The dark-capped bulbul was originally described in the genus Ixos. Some authorities treat the dark-capped bulbul as a subspecies of the common bulbul.^[1] Alternate names include the black-eyed bulbul, brown-capped bulbul, garden bulbul, Kenya Highlands dark-capped bulbul, Ngami dark-capped bulbul, tricoloured bulbul and white-eared geelgat.^[2]

Subspecies

Three subspecies are recognized:^[3]

• P. t. spurius Reichenow, 1905 — Originally described as a separate species. Found in southern Ethiopia
• East Coast black-capped bulbul P. t. layardi Gurney, 1879 — Originally described as a separate species. Found from south-eastern Kenya to eastern and southern Zambia, north-eastern Botswana and South Africa
• P. t. tricolor (Hartlaub, 1862) — Found from eastern Cameroon to Democratic Republic of Congo, southern Sudan, western and central Kenya, Angola, north-western Botswana, and northern and western Zambia

Description

The dark-capped bulbul is mostly greyish brown above and whitish brown below, with a distinctive dark head and pointy crest on top of the head. The back of the head merges into the brown of the back, and the chin is also blackish. The underparts are grey-brown apart from white around the vent (yellow in P. t. tricolor). It is about 18 cm in length, with a long tail. It has a dark brown head and upperparts. Sexes are similar in plumage.

El bulbul tricolor (Pycnonotus tricolor) es una especie de ave paseriforme de la familia Pycnonotidae propia del África subsahariana.

Descripción

Se caracteriza por su cabeza oscura y la zona subcaudal amarilla.

P. t. layardi, Mpumalanga, Sudáfrica.

El bulbul tricolor mide 18 cm de largo, tiene una cola relativamente larga y presenta un pequeño penacho en la cabeza. Su plumaje es principalmente pardo grisáceo, más oscuro en las partes superiores y más claro en las inferiores, haciéndose blanquecino en el vientre. Su zona subcaudal es de color amarillo intenso. Su cabeza es negruzca, siendo más oscura la parte frontal. Su pico es negro y ligeramente curbado hacia abajo. Ambos sexos tienen un aspecto similar.

Taxonomía

Fue descrito científicamente por el ornitólogo alemán Gustav Hartlaub en 1862. Hasta 2017 se consideraba subespecie del bulbul naranjero.^[1]​

Se reconocen tres subespecies:^[2]​

• P. t. spurius - Reichenow, 1905: se localiza en el sur de Etiopía;
• P. t. layardi - Gurney, 1879: se encuentra del sureste de Kenia al sur de Zambia, el noreste de Botsuana y el este de Sudáfrica.
• P. t. tricolor - (Hartlaub, 1862): se encuentra en África Central desde Camerún a Sudán del Sur, llegando por el sur a Angola, el noroeste de Botsuana y el norte y oeste de Zambia.

Répartition

On le trouve en Afrique du Sud, Angola, Botswana, Cameroun, République centrafricaine, République du Congo, République démocratique du Congo, Éthiopie, Gabon, Guinée équatoriale, Namibie, Ouganda, Soudan, Tanzanie, Tchad, Zambie et Zimbabwe.

Il est considéré par certains ornithologistes comme une sous-espèce du Bulbul des jardins (Pycnonotus barbatus).

De driekleurbuulbuul (Pycnonotus tricolor) is een zangvogel uit de familie van de Buulbuuls (Pycnonotidae).^[1]

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Het is een algemene standvogel in Midden- en Zuidoost-Afrika. De driekleurenbuulbuul wordt samen met de Dodsons buulbuul (P. dodsoni) en de Somalische buulbuul (P. somaliensis) vaak nog als ondersoort beschouwd van de grauwe buulbuul (P. barbatus) onder andere door BirdLife International. Deze vogels lijken uiterlijk en qua gedrag sterk op elkaar.

De soort telt 3 ondersoorten:

• P. t. spurius: zuidelijk Ethiopië.
• P. t. layardi: van zuidoostelijk Kenia tot oostelijk en zuidelijk Zambia, noordoostelijk Botswana en Zuid-Afrika.
• P. t. tricolor: van oostelijk Kameroen tot Congo-Kinshasa, zuidelijk Soedan, westelijk en centraal Kenia, Angola, noordwestelijk Botswana en noordelijk en westelijk Zambia.

Bilbil okopcony^[3] (Pycnonotus barbatus tricolor) − podgatunek bilbila ogrodowego, małego, afrykańskiego ptaka z rodziny bilbili (Pycnonotidae).

Kraje występowania tego gatunku to: Południowa Afryka, Angola, Botswana, Kamerun, Republika Środkowoafrykańska, Kongo, Demokratyczna Republika Konga, Etiopia, Gabon, Gwinea Równikowa, Namibia, Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania, Czad, Zambia i Zimbabwe.

Systematyka

Takson o niepewnej pozycji systematycznej, przez część ornitologów uważany jest za odrębny gatunek^[4].

Utbredning och systematik

Trefärgad bulbyl delas upp i tre underarter med följande utbredning:^[3]

• H. t. spurius – södra Etiopien (södra Bale till norra Sidamo-Borama)
• H. t. layardi – sydöstra Kenya till östra Tanzania, Zambia, nordöstra Botswana och Sydafrika
• H. t. tricolor – östra Kamerun till Demokratiska republiken Kongo, södra Sudan, Angola, Namibia och Zambia

Den betraktas ofta som en underart till trädgårdsbulbyl (P. barbatus).^[3]

Status

IUCN erkänner den inte som art, varför den inte placeras i någon hotkategori.
