Der Rotvanga (Schetba rufa) ist ein Sperlingsvogel in der Familie der Vangawürger (Vangidae).[1]
Das Artepitheton kommt von lateinisch rufus ‚rot, rotbraun‘.[2]
Der Rotvanga ist ein 20 cm großer und 30–44 g schwerer Vangawürger mit kräftigem, breitem Schnabel. Rücken und Schwanzoberseite sind rot, die Unterseite weiß, die Beine hellgrau. Beim Männchen sind Kopf, Kehle einschließlich Nacken und Brust leicht bläulich schimmernd schwarz, beim Weibchen nur die Kopfoberseite, der Nacken mit breitem grauen Band, die Kehle ist weiß.[3][4]
Rotvangas treten meistens einzeln oder in Familiengruppen auf, suchen ausgiebig im Unterholz oder auf dem Boden nach großen Insekten, Käfern, Würmern und kleinen Wirbeltieren.[4]
Der Rotvanga gehört zur monotypischen Gattung Schetba und ist in Madagaskar endemisch. Er ist im tropischen und subtropischen Trockenwald und Tieflandwald bis etwa 800 m anzutreffen.[3]

In 1760 the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson included a description of the rufous vanga in his Ornithologie based on a specimen collected on the island of Madagascar. He used the French name La pie-griesche rousse de Madagascar and the Latin Lanius Madagascariensis rufus.[3] Although Brisson coined Latin names, these do not conform to the binomial system and are not recognised by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.[4] When in 1766 the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus updated his Systema Naturae for the twelfth edition, he added 240 species that had been previously described by Brisson.[4] One of these was the rufous vanga. Linnaeus included a brief description, coined the binomial name Lanius rufus and cited Brisson's work.[5] The rufous vanga is now the only species placed in the genus Schetba that was introduced by the French naturalist René Lesson in 1831.[6]
Two subspecies are recognised:[7]

Le Schetbé roux (Schetba rufa), également appelée artamie rousse ou vanga-roux, est une espèce de passereau appartenant à la famille des Vangidae.
Cet oiseau vit à Madagascar : la sous-espèce rufa est distribuée à l'est depuis Andapa jusqu'à Tolagnaro (commune dans la moitié septentrionale et peu commune dans la méridionale) tandis que la sous-espèce occidentalis est présente à l'ouest depuis la forêt de l'Ankarafantsika jusqu'à Sakaraha (assez commune).

Il vanga rossiccio (Schetba rufa (Linnaeus, 1766) è un uccello della famiglia Vangidae, endemico del Madagascar. È l'unica specie nota del genere Schetba.[2]
È un passeriforme di media taglia, che raggiunge i 20 cm di lunghezza e i 30–44 g di peso, dotato di un becco robusto.[3] Il piumaggio delle parti superiori e della coda è bruno-rossastro, quello delle parti inferiori biancastro. Presenta una corona nera con riflessi bluastri, che nel maschio si estende alla nuca, alla gola e alla parte superiore del torace; nei giovani maschi immaturi la gola è biancastra con macchie nerastre.
Si nutre prevalentemente di invertebrati, tra cui vermi, coleotteri, blatte e altri insetti, ma anche di piccoli vertebrati (rettili, rane e piccoli roditori).[3]
La specie vive in gruppi di due-quattro esemplari che esibiscono uno stile di riproduzione cooperativa: il gruppo è tipicamente composto da una femmina adulta, un maschio adulto e uno o due maschi sessualmente immaturi; tutti i membri del gruppo cooperano nella difesa del territorio; gli immaturi non prendono parte all'accoppiamento ma si limitano a contribuire all'allevamento della prole e alla difesa del nido.[4][5]
È ampiamente diffuso in quasi tutto il Madagascar, con l'eccezione delle regioni aride meridionali.[1]
