The majestic African grass owl (Tyto capensis) is a medium sized bird that measures 38-42 cm from tail to tip. These owls feature a heart shaped facial disc. The disc is generally white in color and outlined in yellow with dark colored spots. The African grass owl has dark brown or black eyes and a pale pink or white beak. The upper parts of their bodies are dark brown in color, while the underparts are white (Redman et al., 2009). The primary diet of the African grass owl consists of small rodents. The secretive tendencies of these owls and nocturnal activity make it very hard to observe them in their natural habitat.African grass owls are primarily found in wetland and grassland habitats in Cameroon, Congo, Kenya, and other parts of southern Africa (IUCN, 2013).They generally nest on the ground in drainage ditches where the grass has grown tall.Recent increases in industrialization and urban development in these habitats are threatening extinction (Reigert et al., 2007).
