The holotype and paratypes of Amolops indoburmanensis are described in Dever et al. (2012).
The Indoburman torrent frog, Amolops indoburmanensis (family Ranidae), was recently differentiated as a new, distinct species by analysis of genetic and morphometric measurements from 182 specimen of the Amolops marmaratus species complex, collected from across Myanmar. Although morphologically indistinct from the other specimens, size and 16S ribosomal DNA nucleotide variation distinguish several species (A. indoburmanensis, A. panhai, and newly defined A. marmoratus) from the 182 samples. As reflected by its species epithet, A. indoburmanensis is proposed as accommodating all individuals along the Indo-Burman Mountain range, from the Naga Hills (India) and north Myanmar (Sagaing Division) to the Southwestern states of Chin and Rakhine.
Like other Amalops species, the Indoburman torrent frog is found only in fast-moving mountain streams. Its back is smooth and brown, with darker brown mottling.Of the three genetically recognized congeneric species from this study, A. indoburmanensis is the largest, with a male mean SVL of 71.0 mm, female mean SVL of 86.5 mm.
Molecular analysis further indicates significant diversity within this species, also corresponding with significant size differences, suggesting that A. indoburmanensis itself may represent a cryptic complex of three species (Dever et al. 2012) a proposal requiring more study.
Dever at al. (2012) point out that the discovery of the genetic diversity previously synonymized within Amolops marmaratus calls for revision of the overarching IUCN conservation status of A. marmoratus (ranked as of least concern) to accommodate the smaller population sizes and ranges of newly distinguished and defined species A. indoburmanensis, A. panhai, and A. marmoratus.
