Description: Garden moths last Sunday! Still a week behind.. Mothing again in the garden, I tried 3 times, Sunday, Tuesday and Friday night with mixed results but plenty of new moths for the year and a couple of new records for the garden, namely the Common Lutestring which seemingly isn't that common having not seen one for over 4 years now. The weather has been pretty good this last week but we have had a few cold nights down to 8 degrees which is ridiculous for mid-July! The week ahead looks like we are set for a slight heatwave. Keep those traps out people! Description: Superb night in the rain Well it absolutely poured down last night, the egg trays were sodden inside and out, but with rain comes cloudy skies and generally at this time of year it's relatively warm even when it is raining. I am glad I put the trap out as 46 species were recorded this morning at 5am, with 51 Heart & Dart making up most of the catch. Best of the bunch were Treble Brown Spot and Aleimma loeflingiana. Description: Saturday night from the moth trap Back to trapping last night and after a dull and gloomy day with temperatures really struggling to hit 20 degrees under cloudy skies, the night was hopefully going to be cloudy most of the night. Indeed with lows of 16 degrees it wasn't bad at all but numbers have slowly dropped off recently but the new species keep on coming and 5 possibly 6 new for year's were observed and all being micros. There is still a potential Argyresthia glaucinella, a species I recorded in Bedfordshire 3 weeks ago for the first time. If this is right it will be the 3rd County record, it's such a tiny moth at 6mm long. But better still I recorded a new species for myself, Gelechia senticetella. Description: A pleasing variety Back to trapping, and with a slightly cooler and less favourable night ahead compared to the two weekend nights, I wasn't expecting much. Luckily the cloud stuck around, and so did the moths and again not a huge amount, but a nice array of new species for the year making it another 10 to add to the year list. The majority of the catch was made up of Mottled Rustic (15) and Heart & Dart (34). A nice splash of colour with Barred Yellow and Small Emerald featuring for the first time this year. Privet Hawk-moth made up the size of the catch quite literally!
