Body and arms robust. Head is slightly wider than long with a length of 28% SVL (max SVL of 70.7 mm). Snout is slightly rounded in lateral and dorsal view. Loreal region is slightly rounded in cross section. In life, dorsal coloration of back, arms, and legs is light brown with golden tints. Bars are present on the legs and arms with black spots on the dorsum. Ventral coloration is an off-white. Eye diameter is 1.3 times internarial distance. Tympanum is absent. Postocular fold is visible and reaches the middle of the body. The head has small granules, especially the supraocular areas and under the postocular fold. Dentigerous processes (6-7) are present on the vomer between the choanae. Relative finger sizes are 15>4. Dorsal surface and internal border of the first finger has strong thorny excrescences which are brown in color. The internal border of the second finger has a thin band of spines. The chest has the characteristic Alsodes bilateral patches of small spines. Ventral, dorsal and lateral surfaces of thighs have minute granules; a fold of skin is present between the posterior border of the arm and the middle of the body (Cuevas and Formas 2001). Tadpoles were found at the type locality in varying stages of development, Gosner (1960) stages 25-40. The larvae in stage 25 have ovoid bodies when viewed laterally and are 2.6 times longer than wide. Snout is round. Nostrils are small and situated between the eye and snout tip. Pupils are circular with a goldeniris spotted by black reticulations. Labial tooth row formula is (1)(1-1)/(1-1)(2). Karyotypes show 26 biarmed chromosomes. This species is known only from its type locality, Rio Lircay, Region del Maule, on the western slope of the Andes, Chile.According to Cuevas and Forma (2001), it is in the Alsodes monticola group.

Description of the Holotype The body is robust and the arms and legs are well developed. The head is shallow, slightly wider than it is long, with a length 28% of the snout-vent length. The snout is slightly rounded in lateral view and dorsal profile. The loreal region is slightly rounded in cross section. The nostrils are antero-lateral in position, nearer the tip of the snout than the anterior margin of the eye. The eye diameter is 1.3 times the internarial distance. A tympanum is absent. A postocular fold is evident, reaching the middle of the body. The head has minute granules, especially on the supraocular areas and under the postocular fold. The tongue is rounded, lacking a notch at the tip. Choanae are rounded. Dentigerous processes (6-7) are present on the vomer between the choanae. Forelimbs are robust. Fingers are in order of increasing length: I, II, IV and III. Webbing is absent on the hand, and the fingers have rounded tips. The inner palmar tubercle is ovoid and Â? attened. The outer palmar tubercle is triangular, Â? attened, and slightly bigger than the inner one. Palmar and subarticular tubercles are present. The dorsal surface and internal border of the . rst . nger has strong thorny excrecences, brown in colour. The internal border of the second . nger has a narrow band of smaller spines. The chest has two bilateral whitish patches of small spines. The toes are long, thick and fringed and in order of decreasing length ILarval morphology Larvae in stage 25 have ovoid bodies in lateral view, 2.6 times longer than deep. The snout is round in contour. Nostrils are small, situated between the eye and snout tip. The eyes are antero-dorsolateral and the interocular distance is similar to the internarial distance. Pupils are circular with a golden iris spotted by black reticulations (live specimens). The oral disc is translucent, in an anteroventral position. The width of the disc is 1.4 times the interocular distance. The oral disc is intraangular, with a rostral gap present and a mental gap absent. A line of marginal papillae is seen along the periphery of the disc, except in the rostral region. Scarce intramarginal papillae are found in the mental area. Three to four papillae are found at supra-angular regions. Rostrodonts are wider than they are high, and are well keratinized. Suprarostrodontsand infrarostrodonts possess serrations. Keratodont formula is normal 2(2)/3(1). The spiracular tube is sinistral and laterally located, and the aperture is oval with a well-de. ned border, visible on dorsal view. The proctodeal tube is transparent, wide, and the vent opening dextrally with the distal opening diameter shorter than the internarial distance. Tail length is 1.5 times the body length, with a straight axis. The dorsal . n begins in a fleshy crest on the posterior third of the body. The ventral . n begins at the end of the proctodeal tube. The tail tip is rounded. Fin depth does not exceed the body depth. Dorsal and ventral . ns are transparent with numerous minute melanophores. The dorsal surface appears grey in formalin but dark brown in life. The venter is transparent with dark spots. Two ventral whitish spots are present near the proctodeal tube.

Alsodes hugoi is a species of frogs in the family Alsodidae. It is endemic to Chile and only known from its type locality, Río Lircay, in Alto de Vilches, Talca Province, on the western slopes of the Andes.[1][3] The specific name hugoi honors Professor Hugo Campos Cereceda, for his "remarkable contributions to the development of the natural sciences in Chile".[2]
Alsodes hugoi is only known from Alto de Vilches in Central Chile
Description
The type series consists of two adult males and two adult females. The males measure 68 and 69 mm (2.7 and 2.7 in) and females 66 and 71 mm (2.6 and 2.8 in) in snout–vent length. A juvenile specimen measured 30 mm (1.2 in) SVL. tympanum is absent. The body is robust with well-developed arms and legs. The fingers have rounded tips and no webbing. The toes are long, thick, and with rounded tips. There is no webbing but some membrane between the toes IV and V. The dorsal coloration is light brown with golden tints. The legs and arms have black bars on their dorsal surfaces. There is a black triangular mark between the eyes and pointing backward. The venter is whitish.[2]
Late-stage tadpoles (Gosner stage 40) measure 26–27 mm (1.0–1.1 in) in body length and 61–62 mm (2.4–2.4 in) in total length.[2]
Habitat and conservation
Natural habitat of Alsodes hugoi is temperate Nothofagus forest at elevations of 900–1,200 m (3,000–3,900 ft) above sea level. They live in water in streams or very close to streams under rocks.[1] The species shares this habitat with Telmatobufo venustus.[2]
The species is threatened by tourists who disturb its habitat and by habitat loss through forest fires. However, the species is protected by Altos de Lircay National Reserve.[1]
