Dermophis parviceps (Dunn 1924)

Dermophis parviceps is a small slender species of caecilian which grows to 217 mm in length (Savage 2002). It is the most slender caecilian in Costa Rica (Leenders 2001). It can be distinguished by a pink to gray-brown head that contrasts with the purplish slate color of the dorsum (Savage 2002). Ventrally, this caecilian is grayish (Savage 2002). The throat, lower jaw, and the area near the vent are white (Leenders 2001). The eyes are visible through the skin (Savage 2002). A short tentacle is located about halfway between the eye and nostril on each side of its head (Savage 2002; Leenders 2001). The head is elongated (Leenders 2001). This species has both primary and secondary annuli; 85-102 primary annuli and 11-26 secondary annuli may be present, with total numbers of annuli ranging from 97-126 (Savage 2002). The secondary annuli are few in number compared to other sympatric caecilians, and occur at the posterior of the animal near the vent (Leenders 2001). This species occurs in Costa Rica and Panama, from sea level to 1220 m in elevation (Savage, 2002). It inhabits lowland moist and wet forests, premontane moist and wet forests, and premontane rainforest (Savage 2002). It can be found under logs or leaf litter, usually in undisturbed forest (Savage 2002). It may also be found by excavating down to 400-600 mm below the soil surface, in between tree buttresses (Savage 2002).

This is a rare species of caecilian (Savage 2002). These animals are very secretive. They spend most of their time underground or under logs, rocks or leaf litter, seldom venturing into the open (Leenders 2001). Dermophis parviceps is likely to be viviparous, in keeping with the other members of the genus Dermophis. Caecilian larvae from live-bearing species develop within the mother's body, and feed on maternal secretions from the oviduct. Oviductal secretions are stimulated by the larvae's scraping the oviduct wall with specialized fetal teeth. These specialized teeth are replaced after birth with adult teeth, allowing the juveniles and adults to consume a range of invertebrate prey such as worms and insect larvae (Leenders 2001).

Distribucion en Costa Rica: Se encuentran en las tierras húmedas, bajas y medias al sur de la vertiente Caribe, entre 40 y 1.200 m de altitud (Savage 2002).
Distribucion General: Se encuentra al sur de Costa Rica, el noroeste de Panamá y el norte de Colombia.

Son nocturnas.

Tienen el tentáculo más o menos equidistantes entre el ojo y la narina. El forámen tentacular está situado en el margen anterior del hueso maxilar. La órbita ocular no está cubierta por hueso. No tienen dientes esplénicos y poseen una sóla fila de dientes (dentarios) a cada lado de la mandíbula inferior. Tienen entre 13-46 anillos secundarios y entre 89-112 primarios (total: 112-149 anillos).

Загальна довжина досягає 21,7 см. Голова маленька, трохи витягнута, морда заокруглена. Очі помітні скрізь шкіру. Щупальці короткі, знаходяться між очима та ніздрями на кожному боці голови. Тулуб дуже тоненький, стрункий. Має 85—102 первинних та 11—26 вторинних кілець.

Забарвлення спини майже чорне з пурпуровим відтінком. Колір голови коливається від рожевого до сіро-коричневого. Горло, нижня щелепа білуваті. Черево має сірувате забарвлення.

Спосіб життя

Полюбляє вологі тропічні ліси. Тримається у верхніх шарах ґрунту на глибині 40—60 см, зрідка з'являється на поверхні. Зустрічається на висоті до 1220 метрів над рівнем моря. Живиться переважно хробаками та дрібними наземними комахами.

Самиця народжує до 10 дитинчат у норі у ґрунті.

Розповсюдження

Поширена у південній Коста-Риці, північно-західної Панамі та північної Колумбії.

Описание

Общая длина достигает 22 см. Голова маленькая, немного вытянутая, морда закруглённая. Глаза заметны через кожу. Осязательные усики короткие, находятся между глазами и ноздрями на каждой стороне головы. Туловище очень тонкое, стройное. Имеет 85—102 первичных и 11—26 вторичных колец.

Окраска спины почти чёрная с пурпурным оттенком. Цвет головы колеблется от розового до серо-коричневого. Горло и нижняя челюсть беловатые. Брюхо имеет сероватую окраску.

Образ жизни

Населяют влажные тропические леса. Держится в верхних слоях почвы на глубине 40—60 см, изредка появляется на поверхности. Встречается на высотах до 1200 метров над уровнем моря. Питается преимущественно червями и мелкими наземными насекомыми.

Размножение

Самка рождает до 10 детёнышей в норе в почве.

Распространение

Обитает в южной Коста-Рике, северо-западной Панаме и северной Колумбии.
