Ascomata. Obpyriform to subglobose, immersed or partly immersed, 380-440 μm high, 340-450 μm diam., ostiolate, papillate, coriaceous, brown to black, immersed part lighter coloured than the exposed neck and top; peridium 40-60 μm thick, two-layered, forming a textura angularis; outer stratum composed of 2 or 3 layers of polygonal or subglobose dark or light brown cells with large lumina; inner stratum composed of 7 to 10 layers of elongated, colourless cells with narrow lumina, merging with the pseudoparenchyma of the venter; ascocarps sometimes covered by brown hyphae; necks 140-350 μm long, 130-200 μm diam. at the base, 90-110 μm diam. at the apex, subconical to cylindrical; ostiolar canal periphysate; periphyses 15-35 × 2-3 μm. Asci. Clavate, pedunculate, 160-220 × 34-46 μm, 8-spored, unitunicate, thick-walled below the apex, thin-walled in the peduncle, persistent, without apical apparatus, developing at the base of the ascocarp venter on a small-celled ascogenous tissue that is separated from the peridium by thin-walled, polygonal cells of the sterile pseudoparenchyma, maturing successively, breaking off basally from the ascogenous tissue without releasing the ascospores, and ascospore dispersal not observed to date. Ascospores. Broad ellipsoidal, 32-44 × 18-24 μm (excluding appendages), 1-septate, not narrower at the septum, colourless, with apical appendages; appendages are remnants of the exospore; one caplike, stiff, and homogenous appendage is attached to each ascospore apex, 3-5 μm thick, 6-8 (-11) μm diam., at maturity becoming soft and scooplike, eventually transforming into a coil of delicate fibres that uncoil and form long, sticky filaments, 0.5-1 μm diam. Pseudoparaphyses. Composed of thin-walled, large, polygonal cells filling the venter of young ascocarps before the development ascogenous cells, breaking up to form "catenophyses" which merge apically with periphyses.
