Auchenoglanis is a genus of relatively large, up to 70 cm (2.3 ft) SL, claroteid catfishes native to various freshwater habitats in Africa.[1]
Auchenoglanis is a primitive member of the subfamily Auchenoglanidinae (also includes Notoglanidium and Parauchenoglanis) and represents a stem group.[2]
Species of this genus occur predominantly in the Nilo-Sudan region and Western Africa, but also in the Congo River, Lakes Albert and Tanganyika.[3]
Auchenoglanis species mainly feed on insect aquatic larvae and eventually on small mollusks, alevin, and swimming insects. These feeding habits should also enable them to stand a relatively wide range of ecological conditions.[2]
Following a taxonomic review in 1991, only two living species (marked with a star* in the list) were recognized in this genus.[3] This is followed by FishBase.[1] A review in 2010 found that there are six additional species, bringing the total to eight,[4] and this is followed by Catalog of Fishes.[5] Genetic studies indicate that additional, currently unrecognized species exist.[6]
Auchenoglanis is rare in the fossil record compared to other African catfishes.[2] Auchenoglanis includes an extinct species, Auchenoglanis soye from Western Chad.[2] A few other fossils are also attributed to Auchenoglanis with no specific species described.[2]

Зустрічаються в річках з швидкою течією і чисті озера, в мулистих ґрунтах. Люблять копирсатися в ґрунті. Активні вночі. Вдень ховаються серед каміння, корчів та водоростей. Живляться дрібними молюсками, червами, водними комахами та іншими безхребетними. Крім того, беруть гальку до рота і обсмоктують її на наявність мікроорганізмів.
Під час нересту самець будує гніздо у вигляді ямки і охороняє кладку та мальків. На потомство часто полюють соми родини Кларієві — діноптеруси.
Поширені в басейні річок Нігер, Сенегал, Конго, Ніл, Вольта, в озерах Чад, Мобуту й Танганьїка.
Підходять акваріуми від 200 літрів. На дно насипають дрібний пісок сірого кольору шаром 3-4 см. Зверху розсипають пару грон дрібної гальки. Уздовж задньої стінки розташовують великі камені і корчі, які стануть притулком для риб. До корчів можна прив'язати анубіси і папороть. Мирні. Утримувати можна групою або поодинці. Це не конфліктні соми, але воліють відсиджуватися в своїх укриттях поодинці.
З інших риб сусідами можуть бути дістіходуси, цихліди, риби-ножі. Не можна утримувати разом з лабео. Живляться будь-якими живими кормами. Без проблем привчаються до заміннику живого — шматочках риби, креветки, мідії. З технічних засобів знадобиться внутрішній фільтр середньої потужності для створення помірного течії, компресор. Температура утримання повинна становити 22-25 °C.
