Gousiekteboom[1] of gifbruidsbos (Pavetta schumanniana F.Hoffm. ex K.Schum.) is 'n boom wat inheems is aan die noordooste van Suid-Afrika en tot in Tanzanië en Kameroen voorkom. Dit is 'n struik of boom van 3,5 tot 8,5 m hoog. Die blare groei in groepies van drie en is eiervormig, 6-15 cm lank en 2,0-7,5 cm breed. Hul bokant is glansend groen, die onderkant het sagte grys hare. Die blomme is wit en geurig. Hulle groei in digte klompies. Die plant is giftig en veroorsaak gousiekte wat hartaanvalle onder herkouers ten gevolg het.[2]
Nes die ander vyf spesies wat gousiekte verwek, het die plant endosimbiontiese bakterië in sy blare. Watter rol hierdie bakterië speel is nie heeltemal duidelik nie. Daar is eers gedink dat hulle stikstof bind, maar dit kan nie aangetoon word nie. Die bakterie vorm zwart knobbeltjies op die blare en langs die are. Hierdie bakterië is ook aanwesig in die vrugte. Indien die vrugte in kokende water gedompel word is dit moontlik 'kreupele' plante sonder bakterië te verkry. Hul groei is abnormaal. [3]
