Mexico, from southern Sonora and southwestern Chihuahua southward along the Pacific lowlands and foothills through Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero.
Holotype: USNM 1144
Type-locality: Batosegachie [= Batosecahic], Chihuahua [Mexico].
Four subspecies are recognized by Roze, 1983 [dated 1982], Mem. Inst. Butantan 46:305-338[321]: M. d. distans (Kennicott, 1860); M. d. michoacanensis (Duges, 1891); M. d. oliveri Roze, 1967; and M. d. zweifeli Roze, 1967.
