Varanus juxtindicus Böhme, Philipp & Ziegler 2002

Der Renell-Insel-Waran (Varanus juxtindicus) (eng."Rennell Island monitor" oder "Hakoi Monitor") ist eine Art der Warane aus der Untergattung Euprepiosaurus. Die Art lebt ausschließlich auf der westpazifischen Insel Rennell. Die Erstbeschreibung erfolgte 2002 durch den deutschen Zoologen und Herpetologen Böhme, Philipp & Ziegler.^[1]

Beschreibung

Der Renell-Insel-Waran kann von der Schnauze bis zur Schwanzspitze eine Länge von 150 cm erreichen. Mit dieser stattlichen Größe zählt er zu den größeren Waranen. Die Grundfarbe der Oberseite eines ausgewachsenen Männchens ist dunkel Braun, mit kleinen gelben Punkten gesprenkelt. Diese Punkte erreichen maximal eine Größe von einer Schuppe. Das Muster und die Färbung der Rückseite ähnelt sehr dem Pazifikwaran (Varanus indicus). Der Renell-Insel-Waran unterscheidet sich jedoch von den anderen Arten der Untergattung Euprepiosaurus durch das Fehlen der blauen Färbung am Schwanz. Sein Schwanz ist auch nicht mit Streifen versehen, doch er hat sichtbare Streifen auf den beiden Seiten des Kopfes. Der Kehle von V. juxtindicus fehlt ein jegliches Muster. Die Zunge des Renell-Insel-Warans enthält nur Pigmente an der Spitze und ist ansonsten sehr hell. Das erste Drittel seines Schwanzes ist im Querschnitt rund und enthält keinen Kiel auf den Schuppen.

Verbreitung

Diese Art ist endemisch auf Rennell, eine der kleineren Atoll-Inseln der Salomonen. Man findet ihn vor allem in der Nähe der kleinen Stadt Niupani 11° 44′ S, 160° 26′ O-11.729766666667160.434375 und dem Tegano See.^[2] McCoy (1980) beschreibt ein ähnliches Tier von Malau Olu, östlich von Makira, der östlichsten Insel der Salomonen. Die Identität der Neuentdeckung wurde noch nicht untersucht. Es könnte sich hierbei um eine Unterart von Varanus juxtindicus handeln.

The Rennell Island monitor (Varanus juxtindicus)^[4] is a species of monitor lizards found in the Solomon Islands archipelago. It is also known as the Hakoi Monitor.^[5] It belongs to the subgenus Euprepiosaurus along with the canopy goanna, the peach-throated monitor, Kalabeck's monitor, and others.^[6]

Distribution

This species is endemic to Rennell Island, one of the smaller of the Solomon Islands. It is especially found near Niupani.^[3]

Description

The Rennell Island monitor can reach a length of up to 150 cm from snout to tail. The pattern and coloration on its back are very similar to V. indicus, but this species is distinguished from the other members of the subgenus Euprepiosaurus by the lack of blue coloration (see Varanus yuwonoi and Varanus doreanus). Its tail shows no bands, nor is there a visible band on the side of the head. The throat of V. juxtindicus lacks a noticeable pattern. Its tongue only has pigment at the tip. The first third of its tail is round in diameter, without any keel. "^[6]

Il varano di Rennell (Varanus juxtindicus Böhme, Philipp e Ziegler, 2002), noto anche come varano di Hakoi,^[2] è una specie della famiglia dei Varanidi originaria dell'arcipelago delle Salomone. Appartiene al sottogenere Euprepiosaurus, così come il varano della volta, il varano dalla gola pesca, il varano dalla coda azzurra ed altre specie^[3].

Descrizione

Il varano di Rennell può raggiungere una lunghezza di 150 cm dal muso alla coda. I disegni e la colorazione del dorso sono molto simili a quelli di V. indicus, ma questa specie si distingue dalle altre del sottogenere Euprepiosaurus per la mancanza di pigmento azzurro (presente invece in V. yuwonoi e V. doreanus). Sulla coda non sono presenti fasce, ma vi è una banda ben visibile ai lati della testa. Sulla gola non vi sono particolari disegni. La lingua è dotata di pigmenti solo all'estremità. Il primo terzo della coda, priva di carena, è di diametro rotondo^[3].

Distribuzione e habitat

V. juxtindicus è endemico di Rennell, una delle più piccole isole delle Salomone. È particolarmente diffuso nei pressi di Niupani^[1].

Biologia

Le sue abitudini sono quasi sconosciute, ma potrebbero essere simili a quelle del varano delle mangrovie.
