Представители рода Calyptomyrmex ранее были известны из Новой Гвинеи, Ав- стралии, Зондских островов, Сингапура и экваториальной Африки (Emery, 1887,1908, 1921; Forel, 1901; Viehmeyer, 1916). Впоследствии был описан ряд видов с Цейлона и из Бутана (Baroni Urbani, 1975, 1976) и произведена ревизия африканских видов (Bolton, 1981). Описываемый нами вид - первый представитель Calyptomyrmex в Индо- китае.
Taxonomy. The genus Calyptomyrmex is assigned to the tribe Stenammini (Bolton 2003). The Oriental species were revised by Baroni Urbani (1975) and the Ethiopian species by Bolton (1981). Workers of Vietnamese species have the following features.
Worker monomorphic; frontal lobe strongly expanded and overhanging anterolateral margin of clypeus; frontal carina extremely strongly developed horizontally, in full-face view overhanging antennal scrobe; antennal scrobe extremely deep, bounded above by frontal carina and below by a ridge running above eye, capable of accommodating whole antenna; median portion of clypeus behind anterior margin vertical or nearly vertical, terminating in a projecting biramous appendage (clypeal fork); clypeal fork projecting anteriad over mandibles and partially concealing them in full-face view; mandible triangular, with distinct apical tooth and single preapical tooth followed by several teeth or denticles; antenna 12-segmented, with 3-segmented club; scape curved, somewhat flattened, strongly widened distally, with a narrow projecting lamella on the leading edge of the widened part; eye present but small; mesosoma roundly convex dorsally; promesonotal suture absent dorsally; metanotal groove indistinct or shallowly impressed dorsally; dorsum of propodeum declining posteriorly; propodeal spiracle located very close toor at posterolateral margin of propodeum; propodeal spine triangular; propodeal lobe well developed; petiole pedunculate anteriorly and with a large node; subpetiolar process absent; postpetiole shorter than high; dorsal surfaces of body with short, broad and blunt hairs.
The worker of the Vietnamese species is somewhat similar to that of Mayriella , but in the latter the antenna is 10-segmented, the eye is large and elongate, and the dorsa of the head and mesosoma bear sparse, long, standing hairs.
Vietnamese species. Only one species has been described from Vietnam: rectopilosus Dlussky & Radchenko [= sp. eg-1] (type locality: Bai Tu Long; other localities: Ba Be, Chua Yen Tu, Phu Quoc, Pu Mat, Tay Yen Tu, Van Ban).
Bionomics. Calyptomyrmex rectopilosus nests in rotting twigs and wood fragments on the floor of well-developed forests. Colonies are usually small, consisting of dozens of workers.

Calyptomyrmex is een geslacht van mieren uit de onderfamilie van de Myrmicinae.[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van dit geslacht is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1887 door Carlo Emery.[2] Hij publiceerde tevens de beschrijving van de eerste soort, Calyptomyrmex beccarii die Odoardo Beccari in Amboina had verzameld.
Calyptomyrmex komen voor in Afrika, Azië, het Indo-Australische gebied (o.m. in Nieuw-Guinea) en Australië. Ze leven op de woudbodem, in bladerafval, humus of de bovenlaag van de bodem. Ze maken hun nesten rechtstreeks in de bodem of in rottend hout in de bodem. Vele soorten houden zich dood of blijven gedurende enkele ogenblikken bewegingloos staan als ze verstoord worden. Kenmerkend voor deze mieren is de eigenaardige, soms bizarre beharing op de bovenkant van het hoofd en het lijf, waarvan de functie niet gekend is.[3]

Юго-восточная Азия (14 видов), Афротропика (16 видов), Австралия и Океания (9 видов). [1].
Мелкие земляные муравьи (длина около 3-4 мм) красновато-бурого цвета. На голове развиты глубокие усиковые бороздки, полностью вмещающие антенны. Тело покрыто чешуевидными волосками. Усики самок и рабочих 12-члениковые с булавой из 3 вершинных члеников (у самцов усики 12-члениковые, но без булавы). Максиллярные щупики 2-члениковые, нижнечелюстные щупики из 2 члеников. Наличник широкий с двулопастным выступом (клипеальная вилка). Стебелёк между грудкой и брюшком состоит из двух члеников: петиолюса и постпетиолюса (последний четко отделен от брюшка), жало развито, куколки голые (без кокона)[2].
Более 30 видов. Род Calyptomyrmex различные авторы включали в разные трибы и подсемейства Cataulacinae (Cryptoceridae), Meranoplini, Stenammini и Crematogastrini.
