Xanthoxalis recurva (Ell.) Small, Fl. SE. U. S. 668. 1903
Oxalis recnrva Ell. Bot. S. C. & Ga. 1 : 526. 1821.
Stems erect, 1-2 dm. tall, or rarely taller, villous, arising, often thickly so, from horizontal often much-branched rootstocks ; leaflets green, the blades 6-13 mm. broad, glabrous or nearly so, at least in age, except the ciliate margins ; peduncles much longer than the petioles, usually elevating the cyme high above the rest of the plant ; pedicels strigillose, refracted in fruit; sepals 4-5.5 mm. long at maturity; petals golden-yellow, 12-15 mm. long ; longer filaments pubescent ; capsules columnar, rather slender, 11-13 mm. long, sparingly pubescent, gradually narrowed at the apex.
Type locality' : Near Charleston, South Carolina.
Distribution : North Carolina to Florida and Mississippi, and perhaps northward in the Mississippi Valley.

Stems erect or nearly so, 1-3.5 dm. tall, arising from slender rootstocks, finely villous ; leaflets purple or red, but sometimes with a green midrib or center, the blades 4-13 mm. broad, usually with scattered hairs on both surfaces and more or less ciliate ; peduncles much longer than the petioles ; pedicels strigillose, refracted at maturity ; sepals 4-5 mm. long at maturity ; petals light-yellow, 8-11 mm. long ; longer filaments pubescent ; capsules columnar, rather slender, 11-16 mm. long, or rarely shorter, minutely pubescent or nearly glabrous at maturity, gradually narrowed at the apex.
Type locality : Stone Mountain, Georgia. Distribution : North Carolina to Florida and Mississippi.
