Acropora valenciennesi (Milne Edwards 1860)

Acropora valenciennesi est une espèce de coraux appartenant à la famille des Acroporidae.

This is a loosely branched, tabular coral, reaching up to 2 m diameter. Branches anastomose, but less than in other table corals, and they do not develop unbroken sheets. Terminal branches are smoother and less friable, up to 3 cm thick. There are no vertical branchlets as in Acropora hyacinthus though many branch ends curve upwards. Corallites are rounded or cylindrical and more regular in pattern and arrangement than in other table corals. Its main branches taper like in A pharaonis, but the latter flares upwards with large sweeps and A valenciennesi is tabular. This species has a similar habitat to Acropora clathrata, preferring sheltered but well lit areas. Thus it is found mostly between 5 and 20 m deep, in areas on lee sides of reefs and where there may be extensive sand patches (Sheppard, 1998). Colonies develop into open corymbose table composed of horizontal widely spaced branches and upturned branch ends. Colour: mixtures of brown, blue and green with pale branch ends. Abundance: Common on upper and lower reef slopes and inter-reef channels (Veron, 1986).
