Inhabits a small creek in hilly terrain at an elevation of 450 m (Ref. 2847). An omnivore and egg laying species which is considered a peaceful community fish preferring the following aquarium conditions: pH=7.2, H=10, 26°C water temperature, rock, plant and driftwood cover (Ref. 6398).

Mayland's rainbowfish (Melanotaenia maylandi) is a species of rainbowfish in the subfamily Melanotaeniinae. It is endemic to West Papua in Indonesia, where it is known only from a small stream a few km east of Danau Bira.
