A large Hyperolius (males 25–29 mm) from montane forests in central Africa, bright translucent green with a light golden triangle on the snout and a mottled dorsum. Some specimens have a light, brief, broad dorsolateral stripe, rarely extending further back than the shoulder region. Vocal sac of calling males green. Pupil horizontal.A number of large to medium-sized forest-living Hyperolius have been described or listed by Laurent 1950 and 1972 from Virunga National Park and its vicinity, R. D. Congo. The distinction between them is not well documented and the reference to older type material seems uncertain, and this may reflect on the validity of the current names. Further studies are therefore necessary. They have been treated here under the following names: H. frontalis/, H. diaphanus, H. alticola, H. chrysogaster, H. leucotaenius and H. xenorhinus.This account was taken from "Treefrogs of Africa" by Arne Schiøtz with kind permission from Edition Chimaira (http://www.chimaira.de/) publishers, Frankfurt am Main.

The call is a twice or thrice repeated brief, hard buzzing with an indistinct frequency-intensity maximum at about 3000 cps.A clutch consists of approximately 24 light green eggs in a clear jelly, placed above water.
Biology
(

)
fornecido por Arkive
Besides the broad ecological characteristics attributed to many species within the genus, almost nothing is known about the biology of this reed frog. In the wet season the reed frogs tend to gather near water, preferably smaller temporary water bodies, where they breed. However, very little is known of their whereabouts outside the breeding season (6). The clutch of this species comprises around 24 light green eggs in a clear jelly deposited on vegetation over water (2).
Conservation
(

)

There are no known conservation measures for Hyperolius frontalis but it is known to be present in at least two protected areas, Bwindi National Park in Uganda, and Virungas National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (1).
Description

)
fornecido por Arkive
Hyperolius frontalis has a conspicuous light golden triangle adorning its snout. The rest of its body is predominately bright, translucent green, with slight mottling over a smooth back (2). Like other species within the genus, Hyperolius frontalis has expanded toe pads and fairly long legs that make it an adept climber (3) (4). The call of this species is a brief, hard buzzing, repeated two to three times (2).
Habitat
(
Inglês
)
fornecido por Arkive
This species is associated with montane forests, and has been found specifically in dense secondary vegetation overhanging a stream and in a small forest marsh (1).
Range
(
Inglês
)
fornecido por Arkive
Hyperolius frontalis occurs in the Albertine Rift, one of the richest sites for biodiversity in Africa (1) (5). Although the Albertine Rift stretches through several central African countries, this species only occurs in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and south-western Uganda between 700 and 2,000 metres above sea level (1).
Status
(
Inglês
)
fornecido por Arkive
Classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (1).
Threats
(
Inglês
)
fornecido por Arkive
As with all other Hyperolius species occurring in the Albertine Rift, the distribution of Hyperolius frontalis is likely to be severely fragmented and its population, despite being reasonably abundant, is probably declining because of a decrease in the quality and extent of its habitat. Wood extraction, habitat conversion for agriculture and encroaching human settlement are thought to be the principal causes of habitat degradation in the Albertine Rift (1).

Hyperolius frontalis is a species of frog in the family Hyperoliidae. It is found in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, from northwest of Mount Rwenzori, south to west of Lake Kivu, extending into extreme south-western Uganda in the Bwindi Forest. Common names Bushoho reed frog and white-snouted reed frog have been coined for this species.[1][2][3]
Description
Adult males measure 25–29 mm (1.0–1.1 in) in snout–vent length. The dorsum is bright translucent green with some mottling. The snout bears a conspicuous light golden triangle. A light, brief, broad dorsolateral stripe is sometimes present, occasionally extending further back than the shoulder region. Calling males have green vocal sac.[3][4]
The male advertisement call is a brief, hard buzzing that is repeated two–three times.[3][4]
Habitat and conservation
Hyperolius frontalis occurs in lowland and montane forest at elevations of 700–2,000 m (2,300–6,600 ft) above sea level. It has been recorded in dense secondary vegetation overhanging a small stream and in a small marsh in forest. Breeding habitat is unknown, but presumably the larvae are aquatic. It appears to be common within its range. It is threatened by habitat loss caused by agriculture activities, wood extraction, and expanding human settlements. It occurs in the Bwindi National Park in Uganda and in the Virunga National Park and—possibly—Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
