Viu als rierols de fons rocallós dels boscos de muntanya. Quan no és la temporada de cria, els adults es poden trobar sobre el terra del bosc, en caus o en les escletxes de les roques.[3]
Està amenaçada per la degradació dels boscos, la sedimentació de les rieres, l'extracció il·legal d'or i la quitridiomicosi.[3]

These frogs are associated with rocky streams in montane forests. Eggs are laid on rocks close to torrential streams and waterfalls. The tadpoles remain attached to the rocks, where they develop, not entering the water. It is threatened by habitat loss.[1]

Cette espèce est endémique de l'Est de la Tanzanie. Elle se rencontre entre 600 et 1 800 m d'altitude dans les monts Usambara et les monts Magrotto[1].
Cette espèce est nommée en l'honneur de Mr. Martienssen, qui était un administrateur allemand de district colonial et a collecté l'holotype[2].
