Hassar is a genus of thorny catfishes native to South America.
There are currently five recognized species in this genus:[1][2]
Like other doradids, Hassar species have a row of scutes on each side of their body, though they are more subdued.[3] Hassar species grow to approximately 15.7–25.0 centimetres (6.2–9.8 in) SL.[1]
Hassar species are very rarely imported for the aquarium hobby, and the most commonly imported species is H. orestis. Care of this species is not straightforward; they are hard to acclimate if not in good condition at the point of sale. They are always wild caught. However, once settled in they are easier to care for. These fish should be provided with dense vegetation to feel comfortable. They are not aggressive, though smaller fish are very shy in the presence of larger fish.[3]

Загальна довжина представників цього роду коливається від 15,7 до 25 см. Голова широка і трохи сплощена з сильно окостенілим черепом. На морді є 3 пари вусиків. Мають присадкуватий фігуру з широким тулубом. Перед спинним плавцем є добре розвинена кістяна пластина. Спинний плавець має 4 промені з шипом на першому. Уздовж бічної лінії є ківеличкі щитки, проте не колючі на відміну від інших родів. Здатні виробляти звук, завдяки переміщенню їхніх грудних хребців. Грудні плавці добре розвинені, з сильними шипами. Жировий плавець невеличкий. Анальний плавець має коротку основу, маленький. Хвостовий плавець витягнутий, розрізаний.
Мають сріблясте забарвлення.
Воліють повільні або стоячі водойми. Активні вночі. Днем воліють відсиджуватися під корчами. Живляться переважно водними безхребетними, інколи дрібними рибками.
Поширені в басейні річок Амазонка, Оріноко, Токансіс, Парнаїба і Ессекібо.
