A pair of Summer Tanagers talk to each other across the Agua Fria River of Central Arizona. He's chattering, she's interjecting a sole note from time to time.

The rocky canyons and Cottonwood groves around Yavapai County, Arizona, play (appropriately enough) Summer host to the Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra). He is a beautiful red bird without a crest, she is yellowish, and resembles a female oriole. This is their call.

The Spring Song of the Summer Tanager is a beautiful, tumbling babble - sounds a lot like a Robin. This female was in a Mulberry tree at Peck's Lake [Arizona], 5/22/98.

Here's a typical call of the male Summer Tanager, recorded outside my home window in Arizona 9/6/98.

I love hearing Summer Tanagers (Piranga rubra) when they're in Costa Rica for our winter, because their summer range is right where I live in central Arizona. I hear them every day of the spring and summer here, then get to see them on their winter grounds in November - a real treat! You can hear their summer sounds on my North American Birds page.
