Schizachyrium brevifolium (Sw.) Buse

This delicate annual is found in waste fields and on hillsides. As the species matures the leaves and sheaths turn a rosy red. It is rather rare in occurence.

This is a slender, weedy annual, occurring widely in warm parts of the world. The whole plant turns reddish brown at maturity. The delicate, branching habit, with very obtuse leaf blades, is distinctive.

Culm slender, 0.2-0.5 mm across, tufted. Blade linear, about 3 cm long by 2 mm wide; sheath compressed; ligule membranous, 0.6-0.8 mm long, fimbriate at the apex. Inflorescence a solitary raceme. Spikelets paired, dimorphlc, the upper pedicellate and much reduced, about 1 mm long, the lower about 3 mm long; rachis-joint glabrous. Glumes chartaceous, margins folded, lower glume lanceolate about 2.8 mm long; upper glume slightly fimbriate, 1-nerved, as long as the lower. Lower floret reduced. Upper floret membranous, slightly shorter than the glume, about 2.5 mm long; lemma deeply 2-cleft, with a flexuous awn arising from the sinus; palea linear-lanceolate, 2-keeled, margins fimbriate.

Annual. Culms delicate, erect or trailing, 10–70 cm long, copiously branched, glabrous. Leaves cauline; leaf sheaths keeled, glabrous; leaf blades yellowish green becoming reddish brown, oblong-linear, flat or folded, 1.5–4 × (0.1–)0.2–0.7 cm, glabrous, base subrounded, apex obtuse; ligule 0.5–0.8 mm, lacerate. Raceme slender, 1–2 cm, enclosed at base by spatheole, borne along most of culm length, usually several flexuous peduncles arising from each leaf axil; rachis internodes and pedicels inflated upward, ca. 3/4 length of sessile spikelet, glabrous to villous. Sessile spikelet 2.5–4 mm; lower glume linear-lanceolate, subleathery, back flat, glabrous to thinly pilose, indistinctly 4–5-veined, flanks keeled toward apex, keels wingless, apex minutely 2-toothed; upper lemma 2-lobed to near base; awn 0.7–1 cm. Pedicelled spikelet reduced to 1 or 2 glumes, up to 0.5 mm, lower glume with 3–5 mm awn. Fl. and fr. Jul–Dec.

A low spreading annual, with branching decumbent stems, and short obtuse leafblades. Schizachyrium brevifolium là một loài thực vật có hoa trong họ Hòa thảo. Loài này được (Sw.) Buse miêu tả khoa học đầu tiên năm 1854.

裂稃草（学名：Schizachyrium brevifolium）为禾本科裂稃草属下的一个种。

쇠풀은 열대에서 난대까지 널리분포하는 한해살이풀로 높이 10~30cm로서 줄기는 모여나며 많은 가지가 갈라진다. 잎은 어긋나며 길이 2~4cm, 너비 2~5mm의 선형으로서 편평하고 잎집과 더불어 털이 없다. 꽃은 8~9월에 피며 꽃줄기 끝과 잎겨드랑이에서 원추꽃차례로 달리는데 꽃차례의 길이는 1~2cm이다. 작은이삭은 각 마디에 2개씩 달리는데 그중 1개는 자루가 있으나 1개는 자루가 없다. 자루가 있는 작은이삭은 길이 3mm의 까끄라기로 되고, 자루가 없는 작은이삭은 길이 3mm 정도의 피침형으로서 자줏빛이 도는 적색이다. 포영에는 잔점이 있고 중륵(中肋)에 털과 3맥이 있다. 내영은 끝이 2개로 갈라지는데 갈라진 틈에서 길이 7mm 정도의 까끄라기가 나온다.
