Perennial; culms wiry, loosely luftcd, branching at base and lower nodes, often decumbent and rhizomatous at base, glabrous, 1 0-30 cm. tall ; leaves crowded on the lower part of the culm, the sheaths glabrous; ligule about 1 mm. long; blades slender, involute, sharp-pointed, 1-3 cm. long, sometimes longer on vigorous shoots; panicles long-cxserted, narrow, somewhat loose or interrupted, 2-10 cm. long, the branches ascending, floriferous from base, 1-3 cm. long, the pedicels scabrous-pubescent ; glumes 2-2.5 mm. long, somewhat hispidulous toward the awnUss acutish tip; lemma narrow, somewhat pubescent on the lower part, about 4 mm. long, the awn somewhat flexuous, 5-10 mm. long.
Type locauty: Sulphur Springs, New Mexico (Arsene if Benedict 16405). Distribution; Arid slopes, northern New Mexico and southeastern Utah.
