Leptodactylus rhodomystax, the rose-lipped, thin-toed frog, is one of the many species in the species-rich Neotropical genus Leptodactylus.Recent molecular analysis groups it along with 16 species in a Leptodactylus pentadactylus clade, distinguished from others by the bright white-reddish colored stripe on its upper lip. It is found at elevations up to 500 m (1640 feet) asl in the Guianas, northern and central Brazil to Amazonian Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It inhabits leaf-litter on forest floors and swamps, especially open areas, forest edges, and also in disturbed habitats (de Sá et al. 2014; La Marca et al. 2010).
A moderate sized frog, females average adult size of 79 mm (3.1 in) snout-vent length; males 73 mm (2.9 inches). Males make holes in ground to call from: a single pulse advertising call lasting 0.12-0.23 seconds, with dominant frequency 3,700–5,400 Hz (Zimmerman and Bogart 1988 cited in de Sá et al.). Adults breed in slow-moving, semi-permanent or temporary water bodies, making aquatic foam nests in which to lay eggs (as do others in the L. pentadactylus group).Tadpoles have a dark tail, and grow up to total length of about 47 mm (1.9 inches).A fairly common species, it is listed by the IUCN as of least concern (de Sá et al. 2014; La Marca et al. 2010).

Leptodactylus rhodomystax Boulenger, 1883
Leptodactylus rhodomystax Boulenger, 1883:637. [Type-locality: Yurimaguas, Huallaga River, Peru. Lectotype: BMNH 1947.12.17.81, juvenile.]
Leptodactylus stictigularis Noble, 1923:293. [Type-locality: Kartabo, British Guiana. Holotype: AMNH A–10398, adult male.]
DIAGNOSIS.—Specimens of rhodomystax have distinct dorsolateral folds and a distinct light stripe on the upper lip. The other species in which some or all individuals share this combination of characteristics are flavopictus and rhodonotus (most rhodonotus lack a distinct lip stripe). The posterior surface of the thigh has discrete, distinct light spots on a dark field (Figure 3, N, O) in rhodomystax. The thighs of flavopictus and rhodonotus are variously irregularly spotted and mottled, but never have a pattern of discrete light spots.
ADULT CHARACTERISTICS (N=16).—Dorsum relatively uniform or with narrow transverse bands (Figure 1, B, C); lip with distinct light stripe (Figure 2, H, L); posterior surface of thigh with distinct light spots on a dark background (Figure 3, N, O): upper tibia broadly or narrowly banded (Figure 4, A, D) or patternless; a pair of dark outlined dorsolateral folds from eye to groin; dark outlined fold from eye over tympanum to shoulder; no fold from above tympanum to side of body; male thumb with one spine per hand; male chest spines present; upper tibia and distal tarsus smooth or covered with few to many white tubercles; sole of foot usually smooth, sometimes with a few scattered white tubercles; female SVL 76.5±6.7 mm, maximum 83.8 mm, male 80.2±7.3, maximum 89.6 mm; female interorbital distance/head length ratio 0.21±0.02, male 0.21±0.02; female eye-nostril distance/head length ratio 0.22±0.01, male 0.22±0.01; female head length/SVL ratio 0.36±0.01, male 0.36±0.01; female head width/SVL ratio 0.38±0.01, male 0.38±0.01; female femur/SVL ratio 0.43±0.01, male 0.42±0.02; female tibia/SVL ratio 0.44±0.01, male 0.45±0.02; female foot/SVL ratio 0.46±0.02, male 0.46±0.02.
DISTINCTIVE COLORS IN LIFE.—Lip stripes range from white to rosy gray, the light thigh spots range from white to yellow; the dorsum ranges from brown to bright orange( W. E. Duellman field notes).
LARVAL CHARACTERISTICS.—Unknown.
MATING CALL.—Unknown.
KAROTYPE.—Unknown.

Leptodactylus rhodomystax (common name: Loreto white-lipped frog, rose-lipped thin-toed frog) is a species of frog in the family Leptodactylidae.[3] It is found in the Guianas (French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname) through northern and central Brazil to Amazonian Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador, and possibly in Venezuela where most if not all records represent misidentifications of Leptodactylus riveroi.[1][3]
Leptodactylus rhodomystax are small frogs: the two syntypes measured 25 mm (0.98 in) in snout–vent length.[2]
Habitat
Leptodactylus rhodomystax in found in leaf-litter on forest floor and in swamps in tropical rainforest as well as on the edges of clearings and in more open areas in forest. It breeds in semi-permanent waterbodies.[1]
Reproduction
Leptodactylus rhodomystax is not very choosy about breeding sites and uses many types of temporary and semi-permanent pools.[4] Males call from within holes in the ground.[1] They seem not to form choruses, and usually only one or few males can be heard calling at a particular site.[4] Eggs are laid in foam nests.[1]
