體亞圓筒形,稍側扁,體前部粗圓,向後漸細,尾柄長圓錐狀。眼眶間隔小於吻長。鼻孔小,每側2個,鼻瓣呈卵圓形突起。體腹側下緣有一縱行皮褶。體背平滑無棘。鰓孔內側黑色。背鰭近似鐮刀形,位於體後部,具軟條13-14;臀鰭與其同形,具軟條12;無腹鰭;胸鰭寬短,上方鰭條較長,呈倒梯形,下方後緣稍凹入;尾鰭寬大,上下葉緣尖突,呈略內凹形。體背部為灰褐色或黃褐色,無任何斑點,體側暗銀白色,腹面乳白色。背鰭上半部黑色,下半部淡褐色或灰白色,基底暗色;臀鰭淡褐色色;尾鰭暗褐色上下葉末端及後緣白色;胸鰭灰黃色。

It is a marine species that ranges from Algoa Bay in South Africa to southern Japan, where it occurs at a depth range of 10 to 200 m (33 to 656 ft) and inhabits the edge of the continental shelf. It is a very large pufferfish, reaching 90 cm (35.4 inches) SL. It closely resembles the Atlantic species Lagocephalus laevigatus, but it can be distinguished from that species by its black gill opening. Additionally, it does not overlap in range with L. laevigatus. It is reported to be demersal and oviparous.[2]

Il pesce palla dorato (Lagocephlus inermis (Temminck & Schlegel, 1850)) è un pesce d'acqua salata appartenente alla famiglia Tetraodontidae.[1]
Descrizione
Presenta corpo forte e robusto, ingrossato verso la testa e rastremato verso la pinna caudale, gialla-grigia. La bocca è piccola, con labbra prominenti, denti saldati a becco, di forma triangolare, molto appuntiti. La pelle è lucida e mucosa, viscida. La livrea presenta capo verde tendente al marrone, giallo argentato nel resto del corpo, grigio chiaro nella zona ventrale. Pinne dal giallo dorato al grigio.
È molto simile al congenere Lagocephalus laevigatus diffuso nell'Atlantico.
Raggiunge una lunghezza massima di 90 cm.
Biologia
Come tutti i suoi congeneri, possiede una tossina che può essere mortale già a dosi di pochi milligrammi.
Distribuzione e habitat
Questa specie è diffusa nelle acque tropicali oceaniche dell'Indo-Pacifico (dalle coste del Sudafrica a quelle del Giappone).
