Brief Summary ( Anglèis )

fornì da EOL authors

The Stripe-tailed Hummingbird (Eupherusa eximia) is a medium-sized hummingbird native to Central American mountainous regions from Mexico to Panama (Ridgely & Gwynne, 1976). The species has a brilliant green back, giving way to a rufous-colored tail on top, edged on either side by black-edged white tail feathers, giving rise to the stripe-tailed look, as well as rufous-colored secondary feathers (Stiles & Skutch, 1989). They survive by foraging for nectar and insects, as do all hummingbirds, and reproduce using cup-like nests and polygyny (Stiles & Skutch, 1989; Fogden & Fogden, 2005). They are considered of least concern for endangerment by the International Union for the Conservation of nature (IUCN, 2015).

Distribution ( Anglèis )

fornì da EOL authors

E. eximia occurs from Mexico to Nicaragua on the Caribbean slope of the mountains, and patchily on both slopes of Costa Rica and in Western Panama (Davis, 1972; Stiles & Skutch, 1989; Fogden & Fogden 2005). They prefer to be in cool, wet forests, and while they breed from 800m up to 2000m, when not in breeding season, they can descend to almost 300m in Mexico, and ascend to 2450m in Costa Rica (Stiles & Skutch, 1989; Garrigues & Dean 2007).

Habitat ( Anglèis )

fornì da EOL authors

The birds are solitary foragers, and are usually found in the canopy, although they “frequently descend to shrub level in gaps, along edges, or in adjacent semi-open or second growth” and only the nesting females are routinely found in dark understory (Stiles & Skutch, 1989). They can live in mature forests, secondary forest, and in forest edge (Henderson, 2002).

Morphology ( Anglèis )

fornì da EOL authors

E. eximia is a medium-sized hummingbird, weighing about 4.5g, measuring 9.5cm on average, and bearing a straight bill about 2cm in length (Ridgely, 1976; Stiles & Skutch, 1989). The most striking feature of the stripe-tailed hummingbird are the conspicuous rufous secondary feathers, which can be seen both when the wings are folded and during flight. The outer tail feathers are white with dark outer edges, giving the characteristic striped-tail look. Both sexes have a metallic-green dorsal side, which gives way to a bronze color on the upper part of the tail feathers, dark primary feathers, and a black bill. Ventrally, males are colored green, with a duller belly than upper chest, while females are a pale grey color. Young are buffy colored everywhere (Stiles & Skutch, 1989).

Trophic Strategy ( Anglèis )

fornì da EOL authors

E. eximia forages for nectar in flowering plants both within the forest and on forest edges, where it is seen most often, in low trees and shrubs (Ridgely & Gwynne, 1976). It visits a wide variety of plants, especially Inga trees, shrubs, epiphytes, Clusia, Salvia and Acanthaceae flowers (Henderson, 2002; Fogden & Fogden, 2005). Stripe-tailed hummingbirds often pierce corollas to reach the nectar inside if the corolla is adapted for longer-beaked species of hummingbirds. Like all other hummingbirds, E. eximia supplements its nectar diet with small arthropods for other essential nutrients (Fogden & Fogden, 2005). Stripe-tailed hummingbirds may also be territorial and aggressive at flowers, and may prefer flowers with higher vitamin and mineral content (Carroll & Moore, 1993), although this preference may also be related to nesting seasons when females may need greater quantities of minerals and vitamins (Bouchard et al., 2000).

Reproduction ( Anglèis )

fornì da EOL authors

Stripe-tailed Hummingbirds are solitary foragers, and are polygynous (one male breeds with many females), as are all other hummingbirds (Fogden & Fogden, 2005). They breed in the late wet season to the early dry season (October – March/April in Costa Rica; April – August in Mexico) in nests between one and three meters off the ground in dark underbrush (Davis, 1972; Stiles & Skutch, 1989). Nests are a simple cup structure, formed with pale plant fibers, tree-fern scales, and with lichens (often red) around the outside, and usually near a running stream (Stiles & Skutch, 1989). Clutches are composed of two white, oblong eggs that are incubated for about two weeks. Young stay in the nest for three to four weeks, and have to be fed every half hour by their mother (Fogden & Fogden, 2005).

Eupherusa eximia

The stripe-tailed hummingbird (Eupherusa eximia) is a species of hummingbird in the "emeralds", tribe Trochilini of subfamily Trochilinae. It is found from southeastern Mexico to Panama.[3][4]

Taxonomy and systematics

The stripe-tailed hummingbird has three subspecies, the nominate E. e. eximia, E. e. nelsoni, and E. e. egregia.[3] Some authors have also treated the white-tailed hummingbird (E. poliocerca) and Oaxaca hummingbird (E. cyanophrys) as additional subspecies.[5][6]

Description

The stripe-tailed hummingbird is 9 to 10.5 cm (3.5 to 4.1 in) long and weighs an average of 4–4.5 g (0.14–0.16 oz).[7] Both sexes of all subspecies have a straight black bill. The nominate male has bright metallic grass green upperparts that is more bronzy on the uppertail coverts. Cinnamon rufous secondaries show as a patch on the folded wing. Its three inner pairs of tail feathers are dark bronze green; the outer two pairs have black outer webs and white inner ones with black tips, giving the species its English name. Its underparts are bright metallic grass green with white undertail coverts. The female also has grass green upperparts; its underparts are brownish gray with metallic green spots on the sides. Its tail is similar to the male's with the addition of dusky to black tips on the inner feathers.[8]

Males of subspecies E. e. nelsoni are larger than the nominate. Their underparts are more yellowish green, and the black tips of the outer tail feathers are less sharply defined. Males of E. e. egregia are also larger than the nominate. The black on the outer web of the two outermost pairs of tail feathers is limited to the tip. The female's outermost pair of tail feathers are usually entirely white.[8]

Disttribution and habitat

Subspecies E. e. nelsoni of the stripe-tailed hummingbird is the northernmost; it is found in the eastern Mexican states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. The nominate E. e. eximia is found from Chiapas in extreme eastern Mexico south through southern Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador into central Nicaragua. Both are limited to the Caribbean slope of the highlands. Subspecies E. e. egregia is found on both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes in Costa Rica and western Panama.[8]

The stripe-tailed hummingbird inhabits the edges and interior of humid montane, semi-deciduous, and pine-oak forest and also plantations. In elevation it ranges from near sea level to 1,800 m (5,900 ft) in Mexico, from 300 to 1,800 m (980 to 5,900 ft) in Honduras, and between 300 and 2,450 m (980 and 8,000 ft) in Costa Rica.[8]

Behavior

Movement

The stripe-tailed hummingbird makes seasonal elevational movements, breeding in the higher parts of its range and moving to the lower parts after breeding.[8]

Feeding

The stripe-tailed hummingbird forages for nectar at all levels of the forest, but most often in the canopy. Both species forage lower at edges and in clearings, but only females are regular in the understory. Males often aggressively defend patches of flowers. It feeds on a wide variety of flowering plants and has been noted to favor Inga trees, Acanthaceae and Rubiaceae shrubs, epiphytes, and the flowers of Clusia, Besleria, and Salvia.[8]

Breeding

The stripe-tailed hummingbird breeds between April and August in Mexico and September to April in Costa Rica; its breeding seasons in other parts of its range have not been defined. It makes a cup nest of plant down with lichens (especially red ones) on the outside, and typically places it 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft) above the ground near a stream. The clutch size is two eggs; the incubation period and time to fledging are not known.[8]

Vocalization

The stripe-tailed hummingbird's song is "1-3 squeaky, sometimes metallic notes, then a low, dry, insectlike trill, then 1-3 more squeaks". Its calls include "a liquid, rattling trill", a "sharp, piercing peet or bzeet", and "a sharp buzz".[8]

Status

The IUCN has assessed the stripe-tailed hummingbird as being of Least Concern, though its population size and trend are not known. No immediate threats have been identified.[1] It is considered fairly common to common in most of its large range. However, it is "potentially is vulnerable to habitat loss, especially in southern Mexico".[8]
