Perennial; culms glabrous, erect from a geniculate base, about 3-noded; leaves mostly basal, the sheaths glabrous; ligule obtuse, 2 mm. long; blades acuminate, scabrous, 5-8 cm. long, 2-3 mm. wide; panicle open, somewhat diffuse, 10-15 cm. long, 6-12 cm. wide, the capillary branches spreading, somewhat scabrous, the lower verticillate, branched about the middle, 5-6 cm. long, the branchlets divaricate, few-flowered, the pedicels (branches of the third or fourth order) flexuous, mostly longer than the spikelets; glumes ovate-lanceolate, acute, minutely scabrous on the keel near tip, 2 mm. long; lemma a little shorter than the glumes, obtuse, the awn attached near the base, equaling or slightly exceeding the lemma, finely scabrous, straight or slightly bent about the middle; palea about three fourths as long as the lemma.
Type locality: Sierra Madre, State of Zacatecas, Mexico (Rose 2373). Distribution: Known only from the type collection.
