Chloritis H. Beck 1837

The genus Chloritis Beck, 1837 as traditionally circumstribed contains many probably unrelated species that correspond to a somewhat similar shell type, i.e. a 'chloritid' shell, which is essentially broadly conical, rather smooth and horn to brownish. This overall similarity does not imply close relationships of the species subsumed within the genus Chloritis. The genus has not been formally revised but several molecular phylogenetic studies found species assigned to this genus notto be monophyletic. The type species of Chloritis, Helix ungulina Linneaus, 1758 from the island of Seram (Indonesia), exhibits as rather unique shell feature a deeply sunken apex. It has been suggested to restrict the genus to species that share this diagnostic feature until such time when a taxonomic revision, which incorprates the type species, is available. Species from Timor previously assigned to Chloritis, such as C. argilacea, have been re-assigned to the genus Parachloritis Ehrmann, 1922.
