These sea otters use their lower incisors to scoop clams or urchins from their shells. They have the large canines of a carnivore, but the molars are adapted to crush invertebrate shells.
These sea otters have dense fur and often float on their backs, wrapped in kelp, legs extended, thus protecting thenselves from the cold water and fixing their position. They can use their fore paws to groom themseves and their hind paws and tail to swim when floating in this position.
