When threatened, these snakes inflate their bodies with air while hissing and puffing ferociously. In some regions, such as the rubber plantations in Liberia, they are responsible for a large proportion of snakebites (Spawls et al., 2002).
Night adders
Small, stout terrestrial vipers, never growing larger than 1 m in length. They are made distinct from other adders due to their round pupils and large scales on the top of their heads (most vipers have small scales).
Night adders feed exclusively on frogs and toads and are the only known group of vipers that can consume toads with no apparent ill effects (Ineich et al., 2006; Spawls et al., 2002).
Subsaharan Africa (McDiarmid et al., 1999).
Type-species: Sepedon rhombeata Lichtenstein, 1823 [= Causus rhombeatus (Lichtenstein, 1823)], by monotypy
Several species of night adder have very long venom glands, extending well down the neck; despite this, the venom is not regarded as particularly deadly (although large quantities may be injected) (Spawls et al., 2002).
Night adders are oviparous.
