Magnified 1800X, this Gram-stained photomicrograph revealed the presence of rod-shaped, Gram-positive Actinomyces odontolyticus bacteria that were found in a smear from a brain abscess. Note the hyphae, or branched chains of bacteria, giving these a fungal appearance.
